April 14, 2019 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE --- Washington suffered a tough 4-1 loss against No. 10 UCLA in its final home match of the regular season Sunday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies suffer just their third loss of the season, falling to 17-3 and to 7-2 in Pac-12 play. All three of Washington's losses have come against teams ranked in the Top 10 in the ITA rankings. UCLA improves to 15-6 and to 7-2 in the conference.
The Bruins took the doubles point by winning two of three matches. UCLA took home the No. 2 doubles match by a 6-3 score just before Kenadi Hance and Natsuho Arakawa pulled out a 6-3 win at No. 3 to tie things up. At No. 1 doubles, the No. 5-nationally-ranked UCLA team of Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead, only to see Stacey Fung and Nika Zupancic roar back to make it 4-3. But UCLA would break 40-40 ties in each of the next two games to take the match 6-4 and clinch the doubles point.
UCLA would stretch its lead with a quick win at No. 2 as No. 25-ranked Elysia Bolton beat Vanessa Wong 6-4, 6-4. Washington won its first match of the day on court four as freshman Sedona Gallagher played her first match at No. 4 singles and cruised to a 7-6, 6-2 victory. However, just after that match completed, UCLA won on court six to go up 3-1.
All three of the remaining singles matches would go to a third set. But it was court three finishing first as UCLA would wrap up the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win.
Washington closes out the regular season on Saturday, traveling to Pullman to face No. 42 Washington State at 12:0 p.m. The Huskies then head to the Pac-12 Championships the following week in Ojai, Calif.
