Huskies Erupt For 25 Runs In Win Over Northern Colorado
February 20, 2019 | Baseball
By the end of the second inning, the Huskies already had scored 10 runs and had 11 hits. By the end of the night, every starter had at least one hit for the Huskies and the team had 23 total. In all, seven Huskies tallied multi-hits and had multi-RBIs on the night.
The top of the Huskies' order – shortstop Ramon Bramasco and centerfielder Braiden Ward – led the way for the Dawgs' offense. Each collected four hits and combined to go 8 for 11 with nine runs scored, five stolen bases and three RBI. Ward scored five times, stole three bases and drove in two runs, while Bramasco scored four times and stole two bases.
Nick Kahle, Joe Wainhouse and Connor Blair each hit home runs for the Huskies. For Kahle and Wainhouse, it was their second blasts of the season. Blair, who led California junior college hitters in long balls during the 2018 season, connected for his first as a Husky.
Kahle led the team with six runs driven in on the night – all coming in the first three innings.
Washington tallied crooked numbers in six of eight innings. The Huskies scored four in the first, six in the second and three in the third before going scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings. They erupted for six more in the sixth, four runs in the seventh and capped the scoring with two more runs in the eighth.
Five Northern Colorado errors played a factor on the night, as they led to five unearned runs.
Freshman pitcher David Rhodes (2-0) was the lucky recipient of the Huskies' offensive explosion. In his first career start, Rhodes struck out six Bears over five innings of work, allowing four hits, issuing one walk and allowing just one run. He has now recorded the victory in both of the Huskies' wins this season.
Washington moved to 2-2 on the season, while Northern Colorado fell to 0-4.
The two teams will resume the series on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for noon Pacific Time. Poor weather is forecasted for the Phoenix area over the next two days, so times are subject to change.
