NEW ORLEANS – University of Washington sophomore Rino Sasaki climbed 13 spots on the leaderboard during the final round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate to earn a tie for 22nd, her fourth top 25 showing of the year. Sasaki helped the Huskies to a 15th-place finish overall at 51-over 915 (300-312-303).
"It was another tough day conditions-wise on the course but hopefully we have learned that we need to be prepared or anything, no matter the circumstances," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "I was really proud of Rino and how she played this week. Martha also provided a solid presence for us which was good to see. We're ready to get back to Seattle, get some practice in and get ready for the next one."
During three rounds of blustery conditions, Sasaki carded scores of 73-78-74 en route to a 9-over 225. She closed her final 18 holes with just four blemishes to two birdies, which came on her 14th and 15th holes of the day. Sasaki has only finished outside of the top 25 in one event this year. Additionally, no player in the field finished under par at the event.
Freshman Martha Lewis was UW's next best finisher as she stayed steady the whole tournament posting a 4-over 76 in each round. She finished with a 12-over 228 to tie for 38th which is her best finish with her score counting towards the team total. Lewis finished 3rd at an event during the fall but was competing as an individual at that tournament.
Senior Julianne Alvarez placed tied for 58th with her 16-over 232 (75-78-78) while junior Alice Duan earned a tie for 65th at 17-over 233 (75-80-78). In her first event of the spring campaign, senior Wenyung Keh jumped 12 spots on the leaderboard during her final round into a tie for 71st. She saved her best round for last, knocking in a team-best four birdies and went on to close with a 3-over 75 for a three-day total of 19-over 235 (80-80-75).
The Huskies next head to the Bruin/Wave invitational, Feb. 25-26 in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
