GymDawgs Set For Annual Purple And Gold Intrasquad Meet
December 17, 2019 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – The Washington GymDawgs will hold its annual intrasquad Purple & Gold Meet Wednesday, Dec. 18 at Alaska Airlines Arena. The event begins at 10 a.m. PT and admission is free.
This will be the only chance for fans to see the GymDawgs in action before the home opener on January 20. The regular season will begin January 10 on the road at Michigan.
"Our Purple & Gold meet is always exciting because it means season is almost here," said head coach Elise Ray-Statz. "This year's team is more prepared than we've ever been at this time of year, so they're more than ready to transfer training into competition."
The GymDawgs will feature three newcomers, Isa Weiss, Allie Smith, and Morgan Bowles, while returning 11 gymnasts from last season.
Washington returns two-time All-Pac-12 performer Evanni Roberson, who took home Second Team All-Around honors in 2019 and Second Team honors on beam in 2018. Along with Roberson, Kristyn Hoffa, Madison Copiak, Geneva Thompson, Michaela Nelson, and Maya Washington all return for the 2020 season. That group earned 93% of Washington's individual event titles in 2019.
Also back this year are Brenna Brooks, Talia Brovedani, Amara Cunningham, Meaghan Ruttan, and Hannah Vandenkolk, who were all freshmen in 2019. Brooks, Cunningham, and Ruttan all worked their way into the lineup last year, while Brovedani and Vandenkolk missed 2019 with injury.
"We expect to see what we've been seeing in the gym, which is high-quality routines and consistency," said Ray-Statz. "We're all excited to be back in the arena."
The GymDawgs have their sights set on returning to Nationals for the third time under Ray-Statz, which would continue an unprecedented streak of success for Washington of late. The GymDawgs are seeking to make three NCAA National Championship appearances in a four-year span for the first time in program history.
