LAHAINA, Hawaii โ The 18th-ranked University of Washington men's golf team put together a stellar second round on Saturday at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic as it carded a 17-under 267 to move into first place in the 20-team field. The Huskies outshot the field by seven strokes and currently have a one-stroke lead over second-place heading into Sunday's final 18 holes.
ย
All five Huskies in the lineup shot even-par or better and finished the day with three players in the top 10.
ย
"Our guys played brilliantly today," said head coach Alan Murray. "We got off to a really good start today and just kept it going throughout the round. Petr had a great day today, making birdie on three of his final four holes, which was impressive for a freshman on that course. We're going to need another day like today over tomorrow's final round as its quite bunched at the top on the leaderboard. I'm proud of the guys and you can see how our fall success has given them much needed self-belief because they've worked very hard to continue to get better. We're excited to get out there tomorrow."
ย
Senior Henry Lee moved three spots up the leader board as he carded a 3-under 68 to move his two-round total to 8-under 134 (66-68), which is tied for fifth. Lee opened the day with birdies on three of his first six holes but then carded two bogeys over the next nine to bring him back to 1-under. He closed with two additional birdies over his final three moving him into his fifth-place tie and just five strokes off the individual lead.
ย
Joining Lee in the top 10 are freshman Petr Hruby and sophomore Paul Margolis who each finished the day at 7-under 135. Hruby had a strong round to round improvement as he turned in a 6-under 65 moving him 37 spots up the leader board after posting a 1-under 70 on Friday. His round featured six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole.
ย
Margolis also made a big jump during round two after finishing with a 5-under 66 for his second-straight sub-70 round (69-66). The sophomore also made eagle on the sixth hole and added four birdies on his scorecard to just one error, a bogey on the par-4 10th hole. Junior Jan Schneider went even-par 71 on the day and is now tied for 40th at 2-under 140 (69-71).
ย
Making UW's best score improvement between rounds was junior Noah Woolsey who had a near perfect day with four birdies to just one blemish, giving him a 3-under 68. His two-day total of even-par 142 (74-68) which places him tied for 58th, 37 spots up the leaderboard from where he finished on Friday.
ย
Competing as individuals in this even are freshman Bo Peng and senior Shamu Bodhidatta. Peng moved 24 spots on Saturday up to a tie for 33rd as he is now at 3-under 139 (71-68) while Bodhidatta is tied for 115th at 12-over 154 (72-82).
