November 14, 2019 | Men's Golf
SEATTLE โ University of Washington men's golf head coach Alan Murray has announced the signing of three golfers to National Letters of Intent for the 2020 season. Washington will welcome Taehoon Song, Chaun-Tai Lin and Drew Warford next season.
"We are extremely excited about this recruiting class. We have added some great guys that are extremely good at golf and will make our program better on and off the golf course," said Murray. "We continue to get deeper as a result of these three signees and with the addition of this class, the standard on a daily basis will continue to get higher.
Song, originally from South Korea, comes to the Huskies from Buena Park, California and is currently ranked No. 5 in the latest American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) rankings. Song had a strong showing on the AJGA circuit this summer winning the AJGA Junior on April 5th and added three more top five finishes at the Polo Golf Junior Classic at Liberty National (2nd), the C.T. Pan Junior Championship (T3rd) and the Thunderbird International Junior (T5th). In his six AJGA events, Song only finished out of the top 15 once.
"Taehoon is one of the best junior golfers in the world," added Murray. "His record over the past couple of years has been excellent and he continues to improve. His results speak for themselves โ highlights included a third place finish at the C.T. Pan Junior, a fifth place at the Thunderbird International and runner up at the Polo Golf Junior Classic at Liberty National. He truly loves the game and his work ethic is something that is admirable. He loves to compete and really wants to be a Husky. He will continue to improve during his time on Montlake and will push those around him to be better also."
Chuan-Tai Lin is from New Taipei City, Taiwan and the Taipei Municipal Nanhu High School and is currently ranked 266th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) with his highest ranking coming in at 127th. In the last year he competed and finished in the top 25 at two AJGA events. He tied for 11th at the Thunderbird Invitational Junior and finished in a tie for 21st at the C.T. Pan Junior Championship in April. Additionally on the international circuit, Lin finished fourth at the Malaysian Amateur Open and finished in the top 20 both the 2018 Youth Olympics (14th) and the Australian Master of the Amateurs (16th).
"Chaun-Tai Lin, or Teddy as is he known, is the highest ranked player on the World Amateur Golf Rankings that we are bringing in for our 2020 class.," said Murray. "Hailing from Taiwan and inspired by Husky Great C.T. Pan, Washington is a place that Teddy really wants to be. When you watch him play, you can see why he is ranked so high. He's extremely talented and a very smart competitor. He also has an excellent playing record with a fourth-place finish at the Malaysian Amateur Open, 14th at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Argentina and 16th in the Australian Master of the Amateurs among other successes. Teddy has played all over the world competing in men's amateur events and is a really savvy battle hardened player that will make a big impact for us and our program."
Warford hails from the state of Washington right down the road in Snoqualmie. He was the two-time Pacific Northwest Golf Association Boys Amateur Champion in 2017 and 2018 becoming just the third player in the history of the championship to win in back-to-back years. Warford also posted a top 10 showing at the 2018 Kyle Stanley Championship as he tied for ninth.
"It feels great to add a local player and Drew is unquestionably one of the premier players in the Pacific Northwest as evidenced by his back-to-back victories at the Pacific Northwest Juniors.," said Murray. "Drew is a really gifted player and also loves to compete. He comes from a family of Huskies and it will be exciting to add him to our group. He is an extremely steady performer that has amassed a bunch of wins and high finishes in junior tournaments around the country โ winning both the 2019 WJGA Eastern and Western opens, finish eighth in the 2018 Junior America's Cup while representing Washington, ninth at the AJGA Kyle Stanly and fifth in the State Junior. He qualified for the 2018 U.S. Junior Championship and has shown steady improvement over the past few years. Drew will really benefit from being around the talented and more experienced upperclassmen when he gets here."
