November 01, 2019 | Men's Golf
LAHAINA, Hawaii – The 18th ranked University of Washington men's golf team currently sits in sixth place after round one of Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic on Friday as they carded a 10-under 274 following the first 18 holes. The Huskies sit six stokes off of first place heading into Saturday's second round.
"Overall the guys played really well today," said head coach Alan Murray. "We had a lot of birdies and could have been better but I think we're in a decent position heading into tomorrow's round and we just have to keep making birdies on this course. Henry played really well and to go bogey-free is pretty impressive. Today's round illustrated our depth with all of our guys that counted for our scoring shot under par."
Senior Henry Lee led the Dawgs as he is tied for eighth with a 5-under 66. Lee turned in a bogey-free scorecard with five birdies. He opened he day making par on his first six holes before knocking birdies on his seventh and ninth holes. The senior added two more on par-5 sixth and the par-4 seventh before closing his round with another on the par-4 12th.
Sophomore Paul Margolis recorded UW's most birdies on the day as he managed to card eight in his round, finishing with a 2-under 69. The main errors during his round came early in the day as he went 3-over during his first five holes but he responded quickly making three-straight birdies on holes one-through-three to get back to even par. He went on to add four more birdies mixed with two bogeys to finish tied for 33rd.
Also carding a 2-under 69 was junior Jan Schneider who posted four birdies on the day during a nine-hole stretch. He only recorded two errors over Friday's 18 holes. Freshman Petr Hruby, who was competing in the lineup and not as an individual for the first time this season, is one stroke back as he is tied for 47th with a 1-under 70.
Rounding out the UW lineup was junior Noah Woolsey who is tied for 95th with a 3-over 74. Freshman Bo Peng and senior Shamu Bodhidatta were competing as individuals at the event. Peng finished with an even par 71 to tie for 57th while Bodhidatta went 1-over 72 for a tie for 69th.
Washington returns to the Ka'anapali Golf Club Royal Course on Saturday for another 18 holes of its final fall tournament of 2019.
