Get To Know The Huskies: James Smith
October 02, 2019 | Men's Soccer
James Smith came to UW from across the pond, growing up in Oxford, England. James has appeared in 20 matches prior to this season and has played in five so far this year. He netted his first career goal last season, scoring on a PK at Oregon State.
Let's get to know James!
1. Why did you choose Washington?
Because I found Seattle a great location to go to school and the UW is such a prestigious school.
2. When did you start playing soccer?
At the age of 3 I started running around kicking the ball and played for my first team at 4. Playing against older kids definitely helped me when I was so young.
3. What is your earliest or favorite soccer memory?
My favorite soccer memory was winning the UK futsal competition and then going on to play Barcelona in the next stages of the tournaments.
4. Who are your four favorite soccer players?
Ronaldo, Zidane, Rooney, Crouch
5. What is your favorite professional soccer team? How did you become a supporter?
Manchester United. My dad supported them so I found myself copying him most the time when it came to players and teams.
6. What sport would you play if you didn't play soccer?
Probably golf, I play a lot of golf now especially now it is the summertime. A few of us try and play 9 every weekend. Will be harder when the season comes around.
7. What is the best advice you have ever received?
Just to reflect on yourself. Whether that be in your sport or in life. To take a step back and make sure you're having fun and enjoying what you do.
8. What is your favorite place to go around Seattle?
I like the beach, I recently went to golden gardens for the first time and I think it will be a place I visit frequently this summer.
9. What is one random fact that people wouldn't know about you?
I really don't like FIFA, never been a video game I enjoyed a whole lot. That might change this year though, I really enjoy pro clubs but not so much Ultimate Team.
10. What song would you sing at Karaoke night?
I'm yours by Jason Mraz, it's easy to know and people can get involved
11. What is your pet peeve?
When someone chews with their mouth open. Can't stand it
12. What is your favorite movie?
Avengers infinity war/endgame basically one movie if you think about it. If I had to choose it would be infinity war but they both go hand in hand now. Can't beat marvel and what they've managed to create
13. What is your favorite quote?
You can do anything, but not everything. It makes me think about managing my priorities and focusing my energy to things I control.
14. What is your favorite show to binge watch?
The boys, it's a show for a mature audience but the team have really got into it and watching episodes together.
15. If you could choose where UW would go on its next foreign tour, where would it be?
England, it would be nice to go home and everyone experience my culture and play against some good teams
16. Would you rather go 30 days without your phone or never play soccer again?
30 days without my phone. Wouldn't be the hardest thing in the world. Would be hard to FaceTime my family though.
17. If you could only have three apps on your phone, which would you pick?
Safari, gotta have Google. Instagram. And then Twitter. Twitter is probably the number 1 because everything is on Twitter.
18. If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?
Teleportation. I'd live in England while going to school here. Could travel anywhere in the world for free. No need for a passport.
19. What are the top three things to still do on your bucket list?
Skydive, watch a champions league final and to go to an England game when they're playing in the World Cup.
20. If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would you choose?
Probably Cristiano Ronaldo, would be interesting to be that good at something and have his kind of money. Would be nice to have a tan for once too.
