CORVALLIS, Ore. --- Washington broke a scoreless drought with a nice goal by Corban Anderson, but was unable to pull out the victory in its Pac-12 opener, falling 4-2 to Oregon State on Saturday night at Lorenz Field in Corvallis.
The Huskies suffered their third-straight loss, dropping to 5-4-0 and to 0-1-0 in Pac-12 play. The Beavers improve to 5-2-2 and 1-0-0 in the conference.
Washington got off to a hot start in the match but couldn't find the back of the net early on. Oregon State was able to score one in the first half and went up 2-0 early in the second. The Huskies got on the board in the 64th minute, but two quick goals by the Beavers put the game out of reach.
Washington pressed hard for the opening goal, getting five quality scoring chances through the first 15 minutes of the match. However, none were able to find the back of the net. The Huskies put the Beavers backline under pressure early on, creating several turnovers and scoring chances.
Joey Parish had a couple of chances in the 10th minute. His first was a high floater which beat the keeper but was cleared by a defender on the line. Just 30 seconds later, Parish got another great chance from the top of the box, but it was blocked and cleared.
The Beavers broke through with the first goal, scoring off a counter attack in the 26th minute. After building down the right side, the OSU attacker left slow through ball just inside the box. Joel Walker rushed on as UW netminder Saif Kerawala came off his line to break it up. Kerawala got there first, sliding and kicking the ball away, but right back into Walker. It rattled off Walker and a Husky defender and rolled slowly into the goal.
Oregon State had a number of chances after the first goal, but the Huskies controlled the ball over the final five minutes and nearly tied the match in the 42nd minute. After some great passing through the midfield, Daniel Ribas received a pass splitting a pair of defenders and putting him 1v1 with the keeper well inside the box. However, the netminder was able to come off his line and stop a quick shot attempt by Ribas.
Oregon State would take a two-goal lead with a tally in the 50th minute, getting a close finish on a cross from the right side.
But the Huskies responded with pressure and finally broke through with a goal in the 64th minute. After a corner kick was blocked and partially cleared, Kyle Coffee gathered it on the right wing. He sent a nice cross right to the front of the goal where Anderson got a head on it and sent it home.
The Beavers would answer back with two goals over a three-minute span starting in the 72nd minute to push the lead out to three.
Washington kept up the pressure and was able to get a goal late in the contest from the spot. After an Oregon State hand ball in the box, James Smith, who had just entered the match as a sub, stepped up and took the kick, sending it high to the right corner to make it 4-2. But that would be as close as the Huskies could get.
The Huskies are back in action on Thursday, heading down to UCLA to take on the Bruins.
