Huskies Host Seattle U Sunday In Seattle Derby

No. 16 Washington plays its final tune-up before Pac-12 play, hosting crosstown rival Seattle University in the WAC/101 Club Cup Seattle Derby on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. The match is expected to be a sellout with fans encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at gohuskies.com/MSocTickets. Washington suffered its second loss of the season in its last time out, suffering a 1-0 loss at No. 20 Portland on Friday, Sept. 14. Despite dominating the second half, the Huskies were not able to find the back of the net for the first time this season. Prior to that match, Washington had scored at least two goals in each of its last eight matches dating back to last year–falling one shy of the program record set during the 1981 season.
The Seattle Redhawks At A Glance
The Redhawks are off to a 5-3-0 start to the season, picking up three of its five wins at home. Despite being ranked through the early-going, Seattle is not currently in the United Soccer Coaches' Top 25. The Redhawks are coming off a three-match road trip where they went 2-1, beating LMU and San Diego, but losing 2-1 in their WAC opener at Cal Baptist on Sept. 13. Seattle U. has had no problem on offense, scoring 16 goals through eight matches and ranking second in the NCAA with an average of 18.29 shots per game (147 total).
Nine different players have scored goals for the Redhawks thus far with junior forward Cody Gibson leading the way with three. Five players have two goals including Top Drawer Soccer Preseason All-American Sergio Rivas, who has netted a team-high 29 shots with 16 on goal.
The defense has been Seattle's Achilles heel, allowing 11 goals through eight matches for a 1.37 goals against average.
Series History vs Seattle
Washington leads the all-time series 44-7-5 including a 8-2-1 mark since Seattle U's return to the NCAA DI ranks in 2009. The series between these two schools goes back to 1967 with the teams playing each other at least once from 1967-1988. Seattle U spent time in the NAIA and NCAA Division II ranks, so the rivalry cooled off as the teams played just twice from 1989-2008. But since the Redhawks return to DI, the teams have again played at least once a year.
Washington has dominated the series at home, posting a 24-3-1 record in matches played at UW. The Huskies had won 21-straight matches before Seattle U pulled off a stunning upset in in the NCAA first round match played at Husky Soccer Stadium last year, winning 3-2 in overtime. That marked the first Redhawk win at UW since 1971.
That's Just Offensive, Man
The Washington offense has been impressive through the first part of the season, scoring 13 goals through its first seven matches. The Huskies are averaging 1.86 goals per match thus far, leading the Pac-12 and ranking 43rd in the NCAA. The Huskies are 25th in the NCAA with 6.14 points per match as well.
Washington suffered its first shutout of the season on Friday, falling 1-0 at No. 20 Portland. That loss snapped an eight-match streak where the Huskeis had scored 2+ goals, dating back to last season. That matched the longest streak of games with 2+ goals since the 1991-92 season and ended up one shy of the program record of nine set during the 1981 season.
A total of 11 Huskies have recorded points this season–including nine with two or more points–with five different players scoring goals. Seniors Kyle Coffee and Scott Menzies have each scored four goals with junior Joey Parish adding three goals and three assists.
Last year, Washington scored 40 goals–the most since tallying 45 during in 2013. It was just the fourth time in the last 18 years the Huskies had scored 40+ goals in a season. Washington finished second in the Pac-12 and 17th in the NCAA with its 2.00 goals per game average, scoring at least three goals in a match seven times last season, going 6-1-0 in those contests.
Don't Forget the Defense!
The Washington defense has been impressive this season, allowing just five goals and posting four shutouts through seven matches. The team's shutout percentage of .571 is second-best in the Pac-12 and 19th-best in the NCAA overall. The Huskies haven't just held teams from scoring, but have held teams from taking many shots at all. Washington has allowed just 16 total shots on goal through seven matches (2.29 per match) and 60 shots overall. Freshman Ethan Bartlow is the only field player to play in all 642 minutes this year, helping anchor the Huskies' back line with senior captain Quentin Pearson.
Pac-12 Rankings
While still early, a number of Huskies are ranked among the top players in the conference. Saif Kerawala leads the Pac-12 and is fourth in the NCAA with four shutouts–just one behind the national leaders. Kyle Coffee and Scott Menzies currently lead the Pac-12 with two game-winning goals each. Coffee and Menzies are also tied for second with four total goals and Coffee and Joey Parish tied for second with nine total points. Menzies ranks second in the Pac-12 in shot accuracy, scoring on 60% of his shots takesn this year.
Overtime Blues
The Huskies' 3-2 double-overtime loss at Denver extended their streak to five straight overtime matches without a victory (0-4-1). Washington went 0-3-1 in four OT matches in 2017. The Huskies last overtime win was a 1-0 victory at Stanford on Oct. 30, 2016.
Stopping the PKs
It's been a while since Washington has allowed a penalty kick opportunity and even longer since giving up a PK goal: 57 matches and counting. The last spot kick taken against the Huskies came last year at San Diego State (10/26/17), an attempt which was saved by Saif Kerawala. The last time a PK was converted by an opponent came during the 2015 season when UCLA was awarded three PKs–converting two–in a wild 3-2 double-overtime victory at Husky Soccer Stadium (10/4/15).
Parish the Thought
Joey Parish was an outstanding utility player for the Huskies two weeks ago. The junior scored a pair of goals and added an assist in the matches against Gonzaga and CSUN to open the week. On Sunday, he was called into duty on defense, filling in at right back and helping the Huskies post their fourth shutout out of the season.
Parish is tied for the team lead with nine points, recording three goals and three assists on the year. For his efforts last week, Parish was named to the DI Team of the Week, the second time this season he has earned the honor.
Menzies the Man!
Senior Scott Menzies recorded a pair of goals against Gonzaga, tying him for the team lead with four on the season. Menzies, who ranks second in the Pac-12 with four goals, now has 13 in his career with seven coming during the 2017 season. Of those 13, six have been match-winners, though his goal against Maryland was his only such goal in 2018.
Caution! Hot Coffee!
Kyle Coffee scored a goal in each of the Huskies' last two home matches, including the match-winner against No. 14 Akron on Sunday. Dating back to last season, Coffee has nine goals in UW's last 12 matches. He is tied for the team lead with nine points and is also tied for the team lead with four goals on the season. Coffee now has 15 career goals for the Huskies.
Teves Tallies No. 1
Freshman Dylan Teves recorded his first collegiate goal with a blast in the 63rd minute at No. 19 Denver. Teves worked around a pair of defenders and cracked a shot from just outside of the box for his tally of the season.
Shutout Saif
Saif Kerawala heads into the weekend with a Pac-12 best four shutouts, which gives him 11 over his last two seasons. Kerawala recorded two shutout streaks of over 220 minutes last season, not allowing a goal for 228:36 between Sept 18 and Oct 1, then besting that with a streak of 288:42 between Oct. 19 and Nov. 9. He is currently riding a 119-streak after opening the season by not allowing a goal over the first 185 minutes of the year.
In the Rankings ...
After the Huskies' loss at Portland, they fell to No. 16 in the USC Coaches Poll. Washington came in at No. 14 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll, No. 15 in the College Soccer News Poll and No. 16 in the Soccer America poll. RPI rankings are not yet available.
Number 200 for Clark
UW's match vs. New Mexico on Aug. 27 was the 200th match coached by UW Head Coach Jamie Clark in 11 seasons. Clark posted a 128-50-22 record in 200 matches during three stops as a head coach including an 89-35-19 record at Washington. Clark began his coaching career at Harvard where his teams went 26-10-1 in two seasons. He coached one season at Creighton, going 13-5-2 before moving to Seattle.
1,000 Matches in Program History
The Huskies' season-opening match against Maryland was the 1,000th in program history. Men's soccer has been a varsity sport at Washington since the 1962 season and the Huskies have amassed a record of 626-263-111 over the course of its first 1,000 matches.
