Husky Women's Tennis European Tour: Day 1
September 14, 2018 | Women's Tennis
BARCELONA --- The Husky women's tennis team began its preseason foreign tour as they landed in Spain on Thursday night. The trip will span 11 days with the team spending time in Barcelona, Paris, and Cannes as the team practices, prepares for the fall season, and builds team chemistry.
"With all of the new players on our team we are looking forward to this trip to help with team bonding and for the girls to get to know each other better," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "We will be doing a lot of team activities on and off the court and we feel like this trip will kick this season off in a really good way and set the tone for the entire year. We also want to give our team an opportunity to learn about other countries and cultures and see other parts of the world together."
Over the course of the trip, different Huskies will document their European tour experience with highlights and stories. First off is 2018 ITA All-American and Pac-12 First-Team member Stacey Fung who was recently ranked No. 9 in the preseason ITA singles poll.
"We've only been in Seattle as a whole group for three days and we've been busy. It's been so nice getting to meet all of the new girls joining the team this year and settling back in Seattle these past few days before we head out for our trip to Europe. We had a full day of meetings as a team yesterday with our strength and conditioning coach, nutritionist, physical trainer and compliance staff which got everyone excited for this year and that we get to kick it off with an unbelievable foreign tour to Barcelona, Paris and Cannes."
"We all woke up pretty early this morning to have one last practice at UW before our long travel day. We got to the airport with plenty of time, ordered our to-go Qdoba bowls, and boarded our flight to Frankfurt, Germany before arriving in Barcelona 14 hours later. For me personally, this is my first time in Europe and I couldn't be more thankful to be going on this trip with such amazing people. I can't wait to learn and experience the cultures in these countries for the next 10 days!"
"As soon as we got off of the plane, we checked into the hotel, grabbed some lunch where we had seafood paella, a traditional Spanish dish, and went straight to the beach. The ocean was a little cold at first, but it was so refreshing in the 28-degree (Celsius) weather and it felt amazing to take the weight off of our feet after all of our traveling. We walked back to the hotel through alleyways which looked as if they were out of a movie. Balconies facing onto the street and stone roads everywhere! The architecture and details on the buildings that we've seen in our short period of time in Barcelona is incredible. I've had the chance to take architecture classes at UW and have appreciated the designs and thought process that go into these buildings through pictures and assignments, but to be able to see it in real life is absolutely breath taking!"

"Day one down, we're definitely in need of some sleep, but I can't wait to practice on clay courts and see more of Barcelona tomorrow!"
