Italian Women's Quad Moves On In Light Day For Huskies At 2018 Worlds
September 11, 2018 | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
It was a light day of action involving Huskies at the 2018 World Rowing Championships Tuesday in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, but the one boat with UW rowers on board was successful in its bid to make the A/B semfinals.
That boat was the Italian women's quadruple sculls, which includes Chiara Ondoli '18 and Carmela Pappalardo '20. Rowing in a repechage and needing to finish in the top three to make the A/B semfinals (and thus, remain in the hunt for the A final), the Italian quad did just enough to advance, finishing in third place in a time of 6:21.10, less than a second-and-a-half in front of fourth-place France.
The A/B semifinals are Thursday at 2:48 and 2:57 a.m. PT. The top three in each of the six-boat semis move on to the A final, Saturday at 3:01 a.m. PT.
Wednesday will be a much busier day for Huskies in Bulgaria. For the first time in the regatta, the men's and women's eights will compete. On the men's side, Conlin McCabe '11 will stroke the Canadian eight in heat one at 1:33 a.m. PT while Simon van Dorp '20 will row for the Netherlands in heat two, scheduled for 1:41 a.m. PT.
In the women's eight heats, 2016 Olympic gold medalist Katelin (Snyder) Guregian '09 will cox the United States women's eight in heat one (1:17 a.m. PT). The second heat includes Fiona Gammond '15 in the Great Britain eight. That heat starts eight minutes later, at 1:25 a.m. PT.
In addition to the start of the eights competition, UW rowers will be on the water in repechages in the men's and women's double sculls. Ben Davison' 19 will compete in repechage one (5:34 a.m. PT), needing to finish in the top two among the four boats in his rep, to make the A/B semifinals.
In the women's double sculls, two current Huskies will try to join teammate Anna Thornton '19 of Great Britain in the A/B semis. Sofia Asoumanaki '21 and Valentina Iseppi '20 will scull in lanes one and two in the first repechage, representing Greece and Italy, respectively. The top three (out of six) earn spots in the A/B semifinal.
Also Wednesday, Danielle Hansen '17 will row in one of the two events in which she is entered, in an exhibition race in the para-rowing women's pair. She has already earned a spot in the A final of the para-rowing mixed coxed four.
