July 28, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SAO PAULO, Brazil --- The University of Washington men's soccer team took home the Gold Medal with a 1-0 victory over Brazil on Saturday morning while representing the United States in the FISU (International University Sports Federation) America Games in São Paulo, Brazil this week.
Kyle Coffee scored the Huskies' lone goal in the gold medal game, heading home a cross from the left in the 10th minute. From there the Washington defense took over with Saif Kerawala making a number of fantastic saves in net to earn the cleansheet.
Kerawala and the Huskies posted back-to-back shutouts in the knockout round of the tournament, recording a 4-0 victory over Uruguay in the semifinal match on Thursday. In that match, Joey Parish bookended the match with a pair of goals with Scott Menzies and Blake Bodily recording goals within a minute of each other to break the game open midway through the second half.
The Huskies won their pool in group play despite playing to a pair of ties. Washington played to a 2-2 draw against Brazil #2 to open the tournament, then battled to a 1-1 tie against Mexico. The Huskies won the pool thanks to the Fair Play tiebreaker, accumulating the fewest cards during the two matches.
