July 23, 2018 | Football
Three more Washington football players have earned a spot on preseason watch lists for national awards today. Tevis Bartlett made the watch list for the Butkus Award while Taylor Rapp and Byron Murphy were each named to the Jim Thorpe Award preseason list.
Bartlett, a senior from Cheyenne, Wyo., played in all 13 games last season, starting 11 of them. He earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 and first-team Academic All-Pac-12 after racking up 48 tackles, including 12 for a loss. The Butkus Award goes to the nation's top linebacker.
Rapp and Murphy were two of just four Pac-12 players named to the watch list for Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, presented each year to the country's top college defensive back.
Rapp, a junior safety from Bellingham, Wash., was the Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2016 before earning first-team All-Pac-12 and Academic All-Pac-12 last year. He has started 22 of 27 games over the last two seasons and has 112 career tackles.
Murphy, a sophomore cornerback from Scottsdale, Ariz., played in and started six games as a redshirt freshman last season, missing seven games due to injury. He had two interceptions in his college debut at Rutgers and also had a memorable pick in the endzone in the Fiesta Bowl.
