EUGENE, Ore. - Junior Emily Hamlin made her first NCAA Championships appearance today, racing the semifinals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Hamlin reached the final site with a huge 20-second PR at West Prelims, and would have needed another PR today to move on to the final. Hamlin was unable to advance today, taking ninth in her heat, but earning All-America honorable mention honors.
The Boise, Idaho product was the only Husky in action today on the second of the four-day NCAA Outdoor Championships at Oregon's Hayward Field. Tomorrow will see Andrew Gardner in the final of the men's steeple and Colby Gilbet in the 5,000-meters final.
Running in the second of two twelve woman heats, Hamlin posted the second-fastest time of her career, going 10:14.78. She had run 10:00.35 in perfect conditions in Sacramento at Prelims, but 10:20 was her next-fastest time.
That time put Hamlin 19th overall in the field of 24 athletes, earning her an honorable mention All-America honor.
