Seniors Douglas, Stewart Earn All-Pac-12 Honors
June 11, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE β Senior standouts Jake Douglas and Mitch Stewart both finished up their Husky careers with spots on the All-Pac-12 Men's Tennis Team, as the conference announced its postseason honors today. Douglas picked up First Team honors for the first time in his career, while Stewart was named to the Second Team for the fourth year in a row.
Β
Douglas and Stewart led the Dawgs at the top of the singles lineup all year. The two of them led the team in dual-match singles wins, taking turns at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Douglas had a 15-6 record while Stewart put together a 16-3 mark. They were also ranked by the ITA in singles for the majority of the year, Douglas getting as high as No. 46 and Stewart reaching No. 57.
Β
Douglas finished with a season-high ITA singles ranking of No. 46. He had four wins against players ranked in the top 100, including a win over No. 9 Tom Fawcett from Stanford in the Pac-12 tournament. He earned his first trip to the 2018 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships. In a close match, he lost in the first round to Timo Stodder from Tennessee, 7-5, 7-6.
Β
Douglas is the first Husky on the All-Pac-12 First Team since Kyle McMorrow in 2013 and he is the eighth Husky all-time to earn First Team distinction. Douglas was also the 2018 ITA Northwest Region Most Improved Senior.
Β
Stewart had a very impressive final season as well. He collected a 16-3 record in 2018, finishing the season ranked No. 81 in the ITA singles rankings. Six of those wins came over ranked singles players, including a dominant win over No. 24 Johannes Schretter from Baylor.
Β
Stewart joins a select group of Huskies to earn All-Pac-12 First or Second Team honors all four years of his career. Only three other Dawgs have achieved that: Matt Hanlin, Alex Vlaski, and Alex Slovic.
Β
Stewart also received the 2018 ITA Northwest Region Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award and was named Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team.
