UW Wins All Four Heats On Day One Of IRAs
June 01, 2018 | Men's Rowing
(Saturday's semifinal schedule updated at 1:40 pm PT)
WEST WINSDOR, N.J. – The No. 1-ranked Washington men's rowing team won all four of its heats Friday at the first day of the 116th Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, sending all four boats on to the A/B semifinals Saturday at Mercer Lake.
"Round one is over and I feel like we handled it really well," UW head coach Michael Callahan said. "Going straight to the semifinal in a three-day regatta is really important to conserve energy. I'm pleased we did that. Now it's just taking the next step. The intensity level goes up tomorrow."
Washington opened the regatta with a win in the very first heat of the weekend as the Husky varsity eight, the top seed, rowed to a victory, winning by open water. With only the top-two teams going directly to the semifinal, the race was for second, with Syracuse holding off Boston University for that vital spot. The Huskies, coxed by Rielly Milne and stroked by Bram Schwarz, won in a time of 5:43.157, more than 4.5 seconds ahead of Syracuse (5:47.723).
Yale and Northeastern took first and second in heat two, while Cal and Princeton advanced to the semis from heat three. In heat four, it was Harvard and Brown that moved on. The UW will race in the first semi against Cal, Northeastern, Brown, Stanford and Wisconsin, the last two gaining their spots via Friday afternoon repechages.
An hour later, the UW's second varsity eight, with coxswain Kimmons Wilson and stroke seat Michiel Mantel, made quick work of its heat, taking the lead from the start and rowing to a comfortable victory over second-place Dartmouth, which held off Syracuse for a spot in the semis. The Huskies' won in 5:44.203, with the Big Green crossing the line in 5:50.105. The Huskies will row in a semi with Cal, Princeton, Brown, Syracuse and Cornell.
Washington's third varsity eight followed suit, earning a direct route to the semifinal with a win in its heat. With Braedan Daste in the coxswain seat and Gert van Doorn setting the stroke, the Huskies led throughout, though Dartmouth gave them a good race and finished second, well ahead of the rest of the field. Washington's time was 5:52.058 while Dartmouth finished in 5:54.736.
The UW 3V8+ will face Cal, Northeastern, Princeton, Brown and Wisconsin in the first semifinal on Saturday.
Washington's varsity four faced a tough challenge in its heat as the Huskies were drawn next to Cal, which beat the UW in the same event at the dual regatta, but lost to the UW at Pac-12 Championships. With only the heat winner avoid the repechages, the Huskies, coxed by freshman Adam Gold and stroked by Cole Zwierzynski pulled it off, leading from start to finish. The Huskies crossed the line in 6:26.658, nearly a full-length ahead of the Golden Bears, who finished in 6:29.856.
The Huskies will row in the second V4+ semifinal against Princeton, Wisconsin, California, Northeastern and Harvard.
"There are going to be fast semifinals on both halves of the bracket," Callahan added. "The depth here keeps growing, so you know that you really have to be on your game."
