Gabbie Plain One of Ten Finalists For NFCA Freshman Of The Year
May 09, 2018 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Washington's own Gabbie Plain was named one of the NFCA's ten finalists for National Freshman of the Year today. It is the second year in a row that Washington has had a player named a finalist for the award and third time in the last four years. Plain, who become the second freshman and fourth pitcher in UW history to throw a perfect game, finished the regular season 16-4 with a 1.11 ERA, the lowest ERA ever by a Husky freshman with over 30 innings pitched.
Plain became the ninth freshman in program history to win 15 or more games this season. Three times she has been named the Pac-12's Freshman of the Week, the most wins of that award ever by a Husky. Taran Alvelo is the only other Husky to ever win it multiple times.
An Australian, Plain has three games of double-digit strikeouts this season, including a 13-strikeout game at UNLV that was the most strikeouts by a Husky freshman since Danielle Lawrie in 2006. She has already recorded seven shutouts, tied for the third-most by a freshman in program history, including two shutouts of ranked opponents. Plain has won five games against ranked teams this year as well. She needs just five more strikeouts to reach 150 on the season, a mark only Alvelo and Lawrie have reached as freshman in the last 15 years.
Plain becomes the fourth player on the Huskies roster to be named a Freshman of the Year finalist. Last season, Sis Bates and Taryn Atlee were both named finalists, with Atlee doing so while playing at Rutgers. Taylor Van Zee was a Freshman of the Year finalist in 2015.
Washington's regular season is already complete, with the Huskies ranked fifth in the nation with a record of 44-8. The selection show for NCAA Regionals will be this Sunday, May 13 at 7:00 pm on ESPN 2.
