SAN FRANCISCO - The Washington Huskies earned seven Pac-12 All-Academic awards for their excellence in the classroom this year, led by three First Team awards for Kelly Burdick, Julia DePonte, and Taylor Van Zee. Trysten Melhart and Kirstyn Thomas were named to the Second Team, while Sis Bates and Amirah Milloy earned Honorable Mention status.
The three First Team awards for the Huskies are the most since 2001. Washington has earned at least seven All-Academic awards from the Pac-12 for seven consecutive years now. The five First or Second Team awards are the most such awards for the Huskies since 2000, when Washington earned six. Washington has earned more than five First or Second Team awards in a single season six times now.
Burdick, DePonte, Melhart, and Van Zee have each won three All-Academic awards from the Pac-12 now, earning such an honor every year they have been eligible.
For Van Zee, this is the second consecutive First Team award, as she also was named to the Pac-12's First Team in 2017. The senior was a Second Team All-Academic performer in 2016. Van Zee is one of 13 Huskies to ever win multiple First Team awards. DePonte earned Second Team honors each of the last two years before her First Team award this season. Burdick was named Honorable Mention in 2016 and 2017. Melhart also was Honorable Mention each of the last two seasons before this year's Second Team award.
This is the second consecutive All-Academic honor for Thomas, who was named Honorable Mention last year in her first year qualifying for the award. Bates and Milloy each earned their first All-Academic awards this season.
