SEATTLE – Student-athletes at the University of Washington continue to perform well in the classroom, according to the most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) data tracked by the NCAA. The data, which was released today, indicated that the program average APR rate for Washington athletics was 988. This marks the sixth consecutive year that UW's overall APR rate measures above 980. Three Huskies programs earned NCAA public recognition for earning rates in the top 10-percent in their sport, including gymnastics, women's tennis, and football, who charted the top APR rate in the Pac-12 for the first time.
"The continued achievements by our teams in this measure reflect our student-athletes and coaches' deep commitment to academic success," Jennifer Cohen, UW Director of Athletics, said. "Consistent success like this takes tremendous effort from a great many people, most notably our incredible student-athletes, their coaches, and the outstanding academic support staff led by Kim Durand."
APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The APR scores released today reflect academic rates from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.
NCAA President Mark Emmert applauded Division I student-athletes for their continued academic achievement and dedication to earning a degree. "I am so pleased that the Academic Progress Rates continue to rise, but I am more excited about what those numbers mean: Thousands of college athletes continue to make real progress toward earning their degrees," Emmert said. "A college degree, combined with the skills they learn while participating in sports, will provide countless opportunities for them later in life."
