WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In a close two-set match, Jake Douglas fell, 7-5, 7-6(5), against No. 16 Timo Stodder from Tennessee in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships on Wednesday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The lone postseason representative for Washington men's tennis, Douglas' season and career as a Husky ends with this loss. He finishes his career with a .716 (78-31) career singles winning percentage, good for 10th all-time in Washington men's tennis history.
The first set saw the two trade leads back and forth. No. 46 Douglas was up 4-3 when Stodder won two-straight games to take the lead. Douglas tied it at 5-5, but Stodder put together another two games to win the first set, 7-5.
In the second set, the close competition continued. When Stodder inched ahead at 3-2, Douglas held serve to tie it up again. Facing a crucial break point, Douglas hit it in the net, giving Stodder the 5-4 lead. However, the senior responded by holding serve to even it up at 5-5.
After they both held serve again, it came down to a second-set tiebreaker to keep the season alive. Douglas fell behind early, but he got within one at 5-4 to try to rally back. In the end, Stodder strung together two points in a row to win the set, 7-6(5), and take the match.
