Douglas and Stewart Receive Regional ITA Awards
May 21, 2018 | Men's Tennis
TEMPE, Ariz. – Representing the northwest division, seniors Jake Douglas and Mitch Stewart were both honored with 2018 ITA Division I Regional Awards as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Monday.
Douglas was named the ITA Most Improved Senior, the third Husky to receive the honor, the first since Jeff Hawke won in 2015. Stewart received the ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, just the second player from Washington to win. Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan was the only other to win back in 2011.
All year the Huskies had strong senior leadership from Douglas and Stewart. The two of them led the team in dual-match singles wins, taking turns at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Douglas had a 15-5 record while Stewart put together a 16-3 mark. They were also ranked by the ITA in singles for the majority of the year, Douglas getting as high as No. 48 and Stewart reaching No. 57.
Douglas had a strong season as the senior captain. He had four wins against players ranked in the top 100, including a win over No. 9 Tom Fawcett from Stanford in the Pac-12 tournament. He earned a berth to the 2018 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship, which begins on Wednesday, May 23.
Though Stewart did not get to participate in the NCAA singles championship like his teammate, he had a strong final season. He had six wins over ranked singles players, including a dominant win over No. 24 Johannes Schretter from Baylor.
