Sis Bates Named Pac-12 Defensive Player Of The Year
May 11, 2018 | Softball
SAN FRANCISCO - After a stellar regular season at shortstop, Washington's Sis Bates has been named the Defensive Player of the Year by the Pac-12 Conference. Bates becomes the third Husky ever to be named Defensive Player of the Year nad just the eighth Husky to win an individual year-end award from the conference.
This year, Bates made just two errors all season despite playing almost exclusively shortstop. Her .985 fielding percentage was the highest such mark by a Husky shortstop in the 26-year history of the program. Bates was a part of turning nine of Washington's 11 double plays this year as well.
Bates joins Jenn Salling in 2011 and Shawna Wright in 2013 as Washington's only Defensive Player of the Year award winners. She was also named the Pac-12 Player of the Week on March 26.
Offensively, Bates hit .400/.490/.606 in the regular season, Washington's first .400-hitter since Ali Aguilar in 2015. It was just the 12th time a Husky hitter has hit .400 or better in a season. She was one of only two players in the Pac-12 to hit .400 this season and one of three with an on-base percentage at .490 or better. Bates set new career highs in runs, hits, doubles, home runs, walks, and steals. She led the Huskies with 19 multi-hit games. Bates started the season on a 15-game hitting streak, Washington's longest in over five years, and had four hit streaks of at least four games.
The postseason begins next week for the Huskies, with the selection show for NCAA Regionals will be this Sunday, May 13 at 7:00 pm on ESPN 2.
