Huskies Get One Of Three At Hawaii’s Queen’s Cup
April 07, 2018 | Beach Volleyball
HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Husky Beach Volleyball team sandwiched a sweep over Pac-12 rival Utah around a couple of close losses against ranked opponents today at the Queen's Cup, hosted by the University of Hawaii at Queen's Beach. Senior Carly DeHoog and sophomore Shayne McPherson were 3-0 today at the No. 3 spot.
The Dawgs lost a 3-2 decision to 16th-ranked Loyola Marymount that saw four of five matches go to third sets, bounced back with a sweep of the Utes in the first meeting between the two teams on the beach, and then dropped a 4-1 decision to the third-ranked Rainbow Wahine where UW more than held its own.
Vs. Loyola Marymount
LMU and the Huskies met for the second time this season after UW had a 3-2 win in their season-opener a month ago. Loyola Marymount turned the tables today, but the Huskies will get a chance to win the rubber match on Sunday.
Only one match was decided in two sets, and even that one was close, as LMU won at No. 5, 22-20, 21-16 over Kara Bajema and Samantha Drechsel. LMU's Kovac/Prichard then pulled out a 15-12 third set win over Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye at No. 2. DeHoog and McPherson lost their first set, 19-21, to Doud/Nederend but then rolled from there, winning the second set, 21-11, and the third set, 15-10, for UW's first point. But the Lions got the clincher at No. 1, as Slattery/Ferris held off Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner, 21-16, 14-21, 15-9.
Anna Crabtree and Natalie Robinson came up with a wild win to end things and give the Huskies a second point, as they outlasted Culo/Leiphardt at No. 4 in three deuce sets, 21-19, 20-22, 17-15.
Vs. Utah
Utah was the only Pac-12 beach squad the Huskies had yet to face. Washington controlled things today from the get-go, winning all five first sets and only losing one set overall in the 5-0 win.
The only three-setter was at No. 1, where Anderson and Gardiner defeated Utah's Adora Anae and Dani Barton, 21-17, 15-21, 15-12.
Kara Bajema and Emma Calle were straight-set winners at No. 5, then Schwan and Julye won 21-17, 21-16 at No. 2 over Powell and Luafalemana. DeHoog and McPherson clinched it with a 21-9, 21-18 win at No. 3 and Crabtree/Robinson added a straight set win at No. 4 as well.
Vs Hawaii
.
The Huskies were unable to snap Hawaii's 20-match win streak, but certainly made a run at it. In four of the five matches, the Huskies either took a set off the Rainbow Wahine or lost a set that went to extra points.
DeHoog and McPherson completed their 3-0 day by winning an epic three-setter against Kan/Weaver at No. 3. The first two sets were lopsided, 21-11 for Hawaii then 21-10 for the Dawgs. The teams then battled all the way to 19-all before McPherson and DeHoog finally grabbed the final two points to win, 21-19.
At the No. 1 spot, Anderson and Gardiner went to a third set for the third time today, just missing out on what would have been a signature win for the pair, as Hawaii's Maglio and Schucht pulled it out, 15-21, 21-17, 16-14.
At the No. 2 and No. 5 spots, Schwan/Julye and Bajema/Drechsel both were right on the verge of forcing third sets after losing their first, but both teams lost 23-21 second sets. Robinson/Crabtree dropped a 21-14, 21-10 match at No. 4 in the only spot where the Dawgs didn't get a foothold.
Tomorrow, UW will take on LMU one more time while Hawaii faces Utah. The winners of each match will then play for the championship and the losers will have a third-place match.
