April 25, 2018 | Women's Tennis
OJAI, Calif. – In the opening match of the Pac-12 Women's Tennis Championships on Wednesday, No. 43 Washington women's tennis defeated Colorado 4-1, clinched by senior Alexis Prokopuik.
"The girls came out great this morning and were fired up to get the tournament started," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "It was good to get the doubles point and get some momentum going into singles. We had really good starts on several of the courts and I thought we looked sharp overall."
The Huskies improve to 16-10 on the year after their round-one win over Colorado (9-12). Washington will now face No. 1-seed Stanford, ranked No. 14 in the nation, on Thursday in the second round of the championships.
"We are excited for the opportunity to play Stanford again tomorrow" Stephenson said. "We had a really close match with them a couple of weeks ago and we know what we need to do."
In doubles, Washington took the sets at No. 1 and 2 doubles, dropping the set at No. 3. Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong teamed up to win 6-2 on court one, but Colorado took court three 6-3 to leave it up to court two. Stacey Fung and Katarina Kopcalic came through for the Dawgs, winning 6-2 at No. 2 doubles to earn the doubles point.
Kobayashi picked up the first singles win on court three. The senior won in two sets, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 5 singles, Kopcalic held steady to win 6-1, 6-2, giving UW a 3-0 lead. Colorado was able to pick up one singles win on court six. Angela Li struggled in the match, losing in two sets, 6-2, 6-2.
For the second-straight match, Alexis Prokopuik clinched the win for the Huskies at No. 4 singles. After cruising to a 6-0 win in the first set, the second set was more competitive. Prokopuik battled to win 7-5 and secure the 4-1 win over Colorado.
"Today was awesome!" Prokopuik said. "We went out there on a mission and stayed super disciplined from the start of the warm up to shaking hands after match point. I am fired up to get back out there for the second round."
The match between the Huskies and the Cardinal will begin at 2 p.m. PT at OVAC. Live scoring will be available on Pac-12.com/TennisChamps.
