Alvelo, Bates Named To Top 25 List For Player Of The Year
April 25, 2018 | Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY - The #4 Washington Huskies had two players named as part of the final 25 candidates for USA Softball's Collegiate Player of the Year award, with Taran Alvelo and Sis Bates both earning nominations for their stellar play. Alvelo was also on the preseason watch list for the award. The final ten candidates will be announced May 9, with the winner of the award announced May 29.
The Huskies have twice won Collegiate Player of the Year awards, with Danielle Lawrie taking home the award in both 2009 and 2010.
This year, Alvelo has led the Huskies to the nation's best team ERA with her dominance in the circle. Alvelo is one of 15 pitchers in the nation with a sub-1.00 ERA and is second in the Pac-12 with her 0.86 ERA. The junior has struck out 211 batters, making her one of just six Huskies to ever strike out 200+ batters in multiple seasons. After leading the conference in wins last season, Alvelo is first in wins and opposing batting average this season, with 21 wins and a .122 batting average against. She has ten games of double-digit strikeouts this year alone after recording six such games in her first two seasons.
Alvelo was named the Pac-12's Pitcher of the Week on February 14, the fourth time in her career she has been so honored. Danielle Lawrie is the only other Husky since 2000 to have won at least four Pitcher of the Week awards in their career and only four other Huskies in program history have done so.
Bates is one of only three qualified hitters in the Pac-12 with a batting average over .400, helping the Huskies to the eighth-highest scoring offense. She is second in the Pac-12 with 59 hits and has already set career-best marks in runs (44), doubles (12), home runs (5), walks (23), and steals (6). Her .506 on-base percentage is also second in the Pac-12, while her slugging percentage of .643 is ninth. Bates is also the first Husky since 2011 to have multiple triples in back-to-back years: with just one more, she would become only the sixth Husky ever with double-digit triples in their career.
Bates also has made only two errors all season, good for a .982 fielding percentage that is the best single-season mark by a Husky shortstop in 20 years. 16 times she has recorded multiple hits in a game, including seven three-hit games. The California native also has three hit streaks of five or more games, beginning the year with at least one hit in the first 15 games of the season.
