Four GymDawgs Named To All-Pac-12 Team
April 02, 2018 | Gymnastics
SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 Conference announced the All-Pac-12 teams for gymnastics today, with the #8 Washington GymDawgs earning four awards for their impressive performances this season. Hailey Burleson took home two honors for the second consecutive year, while Monica Riley and Evanni Roberson earned the first All-Pac-12 awards of their careers.
This is the second year in a row that Washington has had at least four All-Pac-12 honors after earning five in 2017. This is the sixth time since beginning competition in the Pac-12 and eighth time in Washington gymnastics history that the GymDawgs have earned at least four All-Conference awards.
Washington has now had at least one gymnast earn All-Pac-12 honors in all-around for six consecutive years. This is also the second year in a row that Washington has earned two All-Pac-12 awards for beam after Burleson and Joslyn Goings each were honored in 2017.
Burleson was named to the conference's Second Team for her performances on all-around and beam, the second year in a row she has been honored for those two events. Burleson finished 23rd in the nation in all-around and took seventh at the Pac-12 Championships. The senior set a new career high for all-around against UC Davis and Seattle Pacific this year with a score of 39.600. Burleson had three scores of 9.900 or higher in that meet, including a score of 9.925 on beam. That was one of two times this year that Burleson matched her career high on beam, a mark she also reached against Oregon State.
Monica Riley put up a score over 9.825 in all but one of her ten bars routines this season, never once falling under 9.800. Riley's score of 9.950 on March 9 on bars was the highest score on any event by any GymDawg this season. Riley finished 29th in the nation with an RQS score of 9.900 on bars and 18th in average score at 9.870. Only three gymnasts in the Pac-12 averaged a better score on bars than Riley this season. Riley joins Kaitlyn Duranczyk (2017), Ruby Engreitz (2011), Samantha Wailor (2011), Raimey Iselin (2008), and Nikki Waiss (2008) as the only GymDawgs to earn All-Pac-12 honors on bars in the last ten years.
Evanni Roberson's All-Pac-12 Beam Second Team selection is the first such honor of her career. Roberson, who competed on all-around much of the year for Washington, ended the year with five beam scores of 9.900 or higher in the last six weeks. She had a score over 9.800 in each of the final ten meets of the year, including two career-high scores of 9.925, against Stanford and in a tri meet against UC Davis and Seattle Pacific.Β
Washington will compete in the University Park, Pennsylvania Regional this Saturday at 1:00 pm, looking to make Nationals for the second year in a row.
