Melhart's Three RBI Help Huskies To 7-4 Win Over BYU
March 03, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE β The #1 Washington Huskies won their fourth game in two days, defeating BYU 7-4.Β Emma Helm, Taryn Atlee, and Trysten Melhart all had multiple hits, with Melhart recording three RBI.Β The Huskies are now 22-0 on the season.Β Samantha Manti pitched a complete game for the Huskies and picked up her fifth win.
Washington jumped out to yet another early lead, this time scoring two runs in the first.Β Sis Bates started the rally with her triple over the centerfielder's head.Β After Kirstyn Thomas and Julia DePonte each reached base, Helm sent a hot ground ball past the third baseman and into left to allow two runs to score.
Melhart would drive in Atlee after an Atlee triple in the third for the senior's first RBI of the day.Β Melhart would add two more RBI during a four-run fourth, bouncing a single out of reach of the pitcher and the shortstop to allow two runs to cross.
That two-run single was a part of a big inning for the Huskies.Β It all started with a Kelly Burdick leadoff single, with the senior scoring a few batters later on a laser double by Thomas to the wall in center.Β Helm would add an RBI in the inning when she ripped a single to right, allowing Thomas to cross the plate with ease.
BYU would score twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh but never cut the deficit to less than three runs as Washington got its second win of the day.
