March 30, 2018 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE β Strong team play pushed No. 49 Washington women's tennis to its first Pac-12 win of the season in a 4-0 victory over Colorado in the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
Β
"I thought today was a great day overall," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "It was a really great team win. We had a good week of preparation going into this match. I thought we responded really well after a tough weekend last weekend. It was just a great team win."
Β
This was the first Pac-12 win for Washington (11-8, 1-3 Pac-12) after dropping the previous three conference matches. Colorado dropped to 8-6, 1-3 in the Pac-12.
Β
The Dawgs dominated in doubles, picking up two quick wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong, ranked No. 32 by the ITA in doubles, jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Their opponents grabbed one game before the Husky duo won the next two to take the set, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, Stacey Fung and Katarina Kopcalic handled their opponents by the same 6-1 score.
Β
The success continued in singles for the Huskies. They did not lose a single set in the sweep of the Buffs. Courts one, two and three were the first to finish, clinching the match for Washington.
Β
The first to finish was senior Miki Kobayashi at No. 3 singles. In both sets, she lost the first game before winning the next six games to win 6-1, 6-1. On top of her doubles win, she won all three sets played by the same 6-1 score.
Β
"We had some tough matches last weekend," Kobayashi said. "I have been struggling in singles, but I just told myself that I trust myself and I trust my teammates."
Β
No. 16 Stacey Fung at No. 1 singles was the second to finish. Her opening sets had a few close games with her opponent taking two games, but Fung pulled away to win 6-2. She then swept the Colorado player 6-0 in the second set.
Β
Freshman Vanessa Wong clinched the match for the Dawgs on court two. She trailed at one point in the first set, 2-1, but ended up winning 6-3. In the second set, she jumped ahead and never trailed, taking it by the same 6-3 score.
Β
Washington will play its second match of the weekend on Sunday against Utah at 11 a.m. PT. The match is scheduled to air on the Pac-12 Network; however, in the event of weather below 50 degrees or rain, the match will be moved indoors and will not be televised.
