Anderson/Gardiner Win Twice As Dawgs Split
March 22, 2018 | Beach Volleyball
LONG BEACH, Calif. β After a couple weeks off and a Wednesday wash-out, the Husky Beach Volleyball team got its season going again today with a double-header at the home courts of fifth-ranked Long Beach State. The Dawgs were unable to knock off the 49ers, but bounced back quickly with a sweep of Vanguard University to go to 3-2 on the season. The No. 1 pair of Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner won both their matches in three sets today, including a big win over LBSU's top pair.

Match 1
Β
The Huskies had a tough task returning to action after their layoff against one of the top squads in the country, but the Dawgs were within a few points in nearly all sets in the 4-1 defeat. Long Beach State improved to 8-1, its only loss a 3-2 defeat to No. 1 Pepperdine.
Β
The first matches on were the No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 matches. Long Beach State got a win at No. 5 with Hannah Matt and Marisa Ramsey overcoming Kara Bajema and Chloe Newton, 21-14, 21-11. At No. 2, Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye lost for the first time this year, in two 21-17 sets to Nele Barber and Rachel Nieto. Barber and Nieto were First Team All-Americans last season and were the No. 1 pair for Long Beach State in its NCAA tourney appearance.
Β
At the fourth spot, Anna Crabtree and Natalie Robinson led late in their first set against Konstantopoulou/Reinking but eventually lost the extended opener, 25-23, and the LBSU pair then won the second set, 21-16, to close it out.
Β
Long Beach State made it 4-0 with a win at No. 3 as Adamcikova/Harward topped Carly DeHoog and Shayne McPherson, 21-17, 21-10.
Β
Washington wouldn't be swept, thanks to Anderson and Gardiner, who earned a big victory over Anete Brinke and Sasha Karelov in three sets. The Husky seniors won the first set, 21-17, dropped the second, 18-21, then came back to pull out the third set, 15-12. The loss was the first of the season for Brinke/Karelov.
Β
"We competed well," said Head Coach Steve Whitaker. "But we made a lot of errors across the board. Long Beach is a pretty darn good team. They take care of the easy things and they're always in-system. They had a lot of options when that happened. But two through five we just had too many errors and it adds up with a team like that. I think towards the end of the season when we can cut down on those things I think we're right there with them."
Β
Match 2
Β
The match order was the same against Vanguard University, in its first season of beach volleyball play. The Huskies won the 2, 4, and 5 spots all in straight sets to quickly secure the win and the 1 and 3 matches would also go UW's way for the 5-0 victory.
Β
Schwan and Julye got a 21-14, 21-8 win over Dowell/Holder at the No. 2 spot. Crabtree and Robinson were 21-11, 21-12 winners at No. 4 over Johnson/Cantu. Bajema and Newton picked up their first win of the season together in dominant fashion, beating Mitchell/Carroll, 21-6, 21-11, at No. 5.
Β
DeHoog and McPherson joined in with a 21-10, 21-8 win at the No. 3 spot over Erdelatz/Dennis. At the top spot, Anderson and Gardiner got taken to a third set for the second time today, but pulled out the third set once again, holding off Tinker/Morrison, 21-13, 18-21, 15-13, to complete the sweep.
Β
Whitaker liked the mindset of the team coming back off the earlier loss. "We went out and took care of things the way we should," he said. "All the way across the board, I think the first team done was Kara and Chloe and they did a good job playing together and they got better that match. Kimmy and Jordan rolled in the first set and then the second set, Vanguard has a good number one, and they didn't make many errors and they took it, and the third was neck and neck but Kimmy and Jordan finally put them away."
Β
The Huskies will now have a day off on Friday before heading to Santa Monica, Calif. for the Pac-12 South Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
