Huskies Handle Huskers in 4-2 Win
February 24, 2018 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – After a long game earlier in the day, No. 1 Washington softball got it done in seven innings against Nebraska in a 4-2 win as part of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday.
The Huskies remain undefeated at 16-0 on the year. Senior Taylor Van Zee followed up her 3-for-5 performance against Texas A&M earlier in the day with a 2-for-4 outing against Nebraska (10-5), notching two RBI in the win. Emma Helm and Kelly Burdick also chipped in an RBI each. Junior Taran Alvelo pitched a complete game, throwing five strikeouts.
Washington started off strong. Van Zee led off in the bottom of the first with a single, which Kirstyn Thomas later followed up with a single of her own. The Dawgs loaded up the bases, but were unable to bring any home.
Following a scoreless second inning, the third saw some runs on the board. After the Huskies defense left two Huskers stranded on base, Thomas was the first up in the bottom of the third. She smacked the first home run of the tournament right down the right field line, curving around the foul post right after crossing the fence. Washington led 1-0 after three innings.
Sis Bates came up big at short stop in the top of the fourth. With a runner on first after being hit by a pitch, Bates grabbed the next batter's grounder, stepped on second and threw it to first in time to complete the double play. She also threw out the next batter, playing a part in all three outs.
The strong defense sparked the offense in the bottom of the fourth. The Dawgs pushed their lead to 4-0 in the frame off of a bunt and a single. With runners on second and third, Burdick put down a bunt, giving Trysten Melhart time to sprint home. Van Zee came up to bat with Huskies on second and third. Her single drove her teammates home, pushing it to a 4-0 advantage after four.
In the top of the sixth, Nebraska got on board. A double to left field got a runner on second, which was followed up by a home run over center field to cut the lead in half, 4-2. The score would hold as Alvelo struck out two in the top of the seventh.
Washington will close out the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Sunday with two games, first against Wisconsin at 9 a.m. PT and then against Long Beach State right after.
