Huskies Drop a Heartbreaker at Northwestern, 4-3
February 17, 2018 | Women's Tennis
CHICAGO β Despite a major upset to win the doubles point, No. 22 Washington women's tennis dropped four singles matches to fall at Northwestern, 4-3, on Saturday.
Β
"We are disappointed to lose this one," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "Credit to Northwestern for competing as well as they did after losing the doubles point. They got up quickly on a number of singles courts and unfortunately, we were unable to extend some of those matches. We have a lot to learn from this match and we know we can compete better and be better. We have another incredible opportunity tomorrow and we are excited to bounce back stronger."
Β
Washington's record falls to 7-3 on the year, while Northwestern improves to 4-3. The Wildcats are now 6-2 all-time over the Huskies in women's tennis.
Β
The Dawgs pulled off the upset in doubles as Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong teamed up to take down the Wildcat's No. 1-ranked duo of Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp. UW took the set, 6-3. After Kenadi Hance and Katarina Kopcalic fell, 6-3, No. 3 doubles ended up being the deciding set. It took a tiebreaker, but Alexis Prokopuik and Stacey Fung pulled out the 7-6 win to earn the doubles point for Washington.
Β
The deciding point was on court five with Hance taking on the Wildcats' Inci Ogut. After a close 7-5 first-set loss for Hance, the second set continued to be a grind. The two traded leads all throughout the set until it was tied 6-6 for the third tiebreaker of the day. Hance came through, winning to the tiebreaker to force a third set. In the final set, Hance was down before tying it at 3-3, but Ogut kept pulling ahead, eventually taking the set, 6-4, and the match.
Β
Fung and Prokopuik handled their singles matches with ease. At No. 1 singles, Fung won, 6-1, 6-2, while Prokopuik on court four took her match, 6-3, 6-2. This put Washington up 3-0 in the dual match, but it was far from decided.
Β
The other four courts all saw Northwestern winning the opening set, including a close 7-6 win for the home team on court five. In order to win, the Huskies needed one of their players to battle for a third set.
Β
Both Kobayashi and Kopcalic fell in two sets in their singles matches on courts three and six, respectively. On court two, Wong lost her first set, 6-1, but battled back to go up 3-1 early in the second. Northwestern's Erin Larner responded by winning three-straight games to take the 4-3 lead. The two traded leads until it was tied 6-6, forcing a tiebreaker. Unfortunately, Wong fell short and Larner took the crucial match-point to tie the dual-match score, 3-3.
Β
Washington will play again on Sunday, this time against No. 24 Illinois. The match will begin at 10 a.m. PT. Links for live streaming and scoring can be found on the women's tennis schedule page.
