Bajema Named AVCA All-American
December 12, 2018 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – Junior Kara Bajema joins select company as she earned a place on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Team this morning. Bajema was named a Third Team All-American, her first time earning the honor and the seventeenth consecutive season that Washington has had an All-American on the first, second, or third teams.
Earning AVCA All-America honors is the peak achievement for a collegiate volleyball player. The organization selects 14-players to the first team, second team, and third team, plus additional honorable mentions.
Bajema, an outside hitter from Lynden, Wash., was previously named to the All-Pac-12 Team and the AVCA Pacific North All-Region Team.
In her first season as a six-rotation player, Bajema led the Huskies with 475 kills, a 3.86 kills per set average. That ranks her sixth in the Pac-12. Bajema was also a primary passer for the first time this season, receiving the most opposing serves by more than three hundred. She also ranked second on the team with a career-high 2.71 digs per set and added 0.20 aces per set and 0.45 blocks per set.
Bajema's 475 kills are the most by a Husky since 2014 and were just two kills away from 10th-most in UW single season history. Her 533.5 points are ninth-most in a single season and also the most since 2014.
Washington finished up its season last Friday in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championships, the sixth time in the past seven years they have advanced at least that far.
