Huskies Snap Streak With 2-1 Win at San Diego State
October 07, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Freshman Dylan Teves scored on a breakaway in the 72nd minute and senior Kyle Coffee tallied two assists to lead Washington's men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at San Diego State in a Pac-12 match on Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck.
The Huskies snap a four-game losing streak with the victory and improve to 6-5-0 on the season and to 1-2-0 in Pac-12 play. The loss drops the Aztecs to 5-5-1 and to 1-3-0 in the conference.
After a quiet first half, the teams erupted in a very physical second half. Washington would break the ice with a goal in the 58th minute as Blake Bodily tallied his first goal of the season. San Diego State would answer with a gold in the 66th minute. But Teves, who made his first collegiate start in the game, netted the match-winner in the 72nd minute to give the Huskies their first Pac-12 win of the year.
Teves benefited from a great play by the Washington defense to score the go-ahead goal. Fellow freshman Charlie Ostrem—who also made his first collegiate start—made a great play to steal the ball from an SDSU attacker deep in the home team's end. The pass went to Bodily, then up ahead to Coffee who back-heeled a pass to Teves who got behind the Aztec defense for the breakaway. Teves fired a low shot from just outside the box to beat the on-rushing keeper for the goal.
The Huskies opened the scoring in the 58th minute thanks again to a nice play by Coffee. Coffee did great work getting the ball just over midfield and carrying it through the SDSU defense to the top of the box. The senior drew four defenders to him, split them all and slotted a pass to a wide-open Bodily on the other side of the box where he was 1v1 with the keeper. Bodily cracked a hard shot off the near post and in to give the Huskies the 1-0 lead. It was the first goal of the season for the sophomore and Coffee's third assist of the season.
San Diego State tied the game shortly after the UW goal. Damian German received a deep throw and walked down the goal line until he nearly was at the goal mouth. He quickly sent a pass in the middle of a crowd where Pablo Pelaez rushed out and blasted it into the net.
The Aztecs ended up playing the final 10 minutes with just 10 men after Pelaez received his second yellow card on a hard challenge in the 80th minute. It was one of nine cards handed out in the game—seven of which came in the second half.
The first half was a midfield battle as neither team was able to get more than one or two good chances. San Diego State had the first real chance in the game in the 10th minute as a cross from the right side found an SDSU attacker on the left side. But his full volley wasn't hit with much power and rolled softly wide of the goal.
In the 27th minute, Joey Parish had a chance off a corner kick, trying a half volley from the far side of the goal, but the attempt took a deflection an SDSU defender and went out. The ensuing corner kick results in another shot, but it goes wide.
Eight minutes later, Blake Bodily made a great run to the left side, worked his way into the box where he sent a low cross toward a pair of streaking Husky attackers. But Aztec netminder Max Watkin was able to intercept the cross and hold on to snuff out the attack.
Saif Kerawala was only credited with one save in the game, though he came off his line to stop several SDSU chances and earned his sixth win of the season.
The Huskies return home this week after playing four of their last five on the road. Washington hosts California on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium before welcoming in Stanford on Sunday for a 3:00 p.m. tilt. Overall, the Huskies play six of their final eight games at home.
