Huskies Down Cal With Overtime PK
October 11, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Jaret Townsend was fouled in the box in the 104th minute, earning a penalty kick which Scott Menzies calmly converted as Washington picked up its second-straight win with a 1-0 victory over Cal in a Pac-12 match on Thursday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies improve to 7-5-0 on the season and are back even in conference play at 2-2-0. The Golden Bears drop to 5-5-2 and to 1-3-0 on the year
The two teams battled through an entertaining game through regulation, though the Huskies dominated play for much of the contest. Washington held a 19-4 edge in shots in the match, including out-shooting Cal 8-0 in the second half. However, neither team was able to find the back of the net over the first 100 minutes.
Washington finally broke through in the second overtime as Townsend carried the ball into box from the left side and was chopped down by the Golden Bears' Sam Junqua. Menzies stepped up to take the spot kick, sending the ball into the lower right corner as Cal netminder Noah Texter dove left. The goal was Menzies team-best fifth goal of the year and first since Sept. 3.
The Huskies won their first overtime game since Oct. 30, 2016 when they won at Stanford in double overtime. The Huskies were 0-3-1 in their previous four overtime contest including a rough 3-2 defeat at Denver earlier this season.
Cal had its best scoring chance of the game in the first half. In the 31st minute, Sam Ebstein found Shinya Kadono with a nice through ball which allowed Kadono to split a pair of Husky defenders and move toward goal with just Saif Kerawala to beat. But Kerawala came charging off his line and made a sliding save to deny the Bears.
Kerawala made another great stop midway through the second half, sliding in to stop an on-rushing attacker, but taking a hard shot to the body in the process. A moment later he had to be helped off the field with what appeared to be a leg injury. Sophomore Bryce Logan came on to replace Kerawala, making one save over 40 minutes to earn his second collegiate victory.
"You become nervous in these games because you've done everything but win it," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "Saif made a great save to keep us in it for a while. Bryce has been nipping at Saif's heels for a while and deserves a shot .The way we look at it is we have two starters in goal. But Bryce has worked hard and he deserves the chance and he looks like he may get another one on Sunday."
Logan's previous win came against Cal at home last year as he made his first collegiate start against the Golden Bears, making three saves to earn the shutout. Logan has appeared in three matches in his career, posting a 2-0-0 record with a 0.00 GAA in 148 minutes.
"I was worried about Saif, first of all, because that was a really tough tackle. He was really brave to go into it, so my first concern was for him," said Logan. "(UW Goalkeeper Coach) Rich (Reese) always has us being ready on the bench. A little bit of nerves going onto the pitch, but once you get in, it's all soccer."

The Cardinal lost 1-0 at Oregon State on Thursday which coupled with Husky's win moves Washington within three points of Pac-12 leaders Stanford and UCLA. The match kicks off at 3:00 p.m.
