Huskies Head to California to Face UCLA and San Diego State

The Huskies head back on the road for two of their final four road contests of the year. Up first is a trip to Los Angeles to face UCLA on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. The match will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network with live stats available on UCLABruins.com.
Washington then heads south to face San Diego State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. The match will be streamed on the Mountain West Network website (themw.com) with live stats available through the SDSU website (GoAztecs.com).
Last year, the Huskies were able to sweep the road trip to southern California for the first time since SDSU joined the Pac-12 men's soccer ranks in 2005. Washington won both matches by 1-0 scores, using solid defense to earn a big six road points near the end of the 2017 season.
The Huskies are looking to snap a three-match losing streak–the longest since the 2004 season. Washington was able to snap a long scoreless streak with a pair of goals in its Pac-12 Opener at Oregon State on Saturday, but allowed four goals in the loss.
Washington has just four road matches remaining on the schedule with six home contests left.
The UCLA Bruins At A Glance
The Bruins opened the Pac-12 weekend with a road split last week, beating Cal 2-1 on Thursday before falling 3-0 at Stanford on Sunday. The win over Cal was the lone victory for UCLA in its last four matches after opening the season at 4-1-0.
The Bruins' offense has been down to start the season, scoring just 13 goals in nine matches. Four of those came in a season-opening 4-0 victory at then-No. 18 Coastal Carolina. Over the last four matches, UCLA has just four goals including two in the win at Cal. The Bruins also rank next to last in the conference in goals against average at 1.22, allowing nine goals over the last four matches.
Series History vs. UCLA
UCLA holds a commanding 31-15-3 record in the all-time series, but the Huskies have won three of the last four. The teams split the series last year with each recording a 1-0 victory on the other's home pitch. Washington swept the season series in 2016, winning back-to-back games against the Bruins for the first time since the 2000 season. The Huskies are 8-16-1 in games at UCLA, going 3-3-0 in the last six matches in LA.
The San Diego State Aztecs At A Glance
The Aztecs suffered a pair of shutouts to open Pac-12 play last week, losing 3-0 at Stanford on Thursday, then falling 1-0 at California on Sunday. The Stanford loss snapped a four-match winning streak where San Diego State outscored its opponents 8-3. Outside of those four wins, the Aztecs have gone 0-4-1 and been outscored 9-2. Junior midfielder Pablo Pelaez leads the team with four goals scored and has two assists.
San Diego State has been strong at home, going 4-1-0 in five home contests his year. Nine of the team's 10 goals have come at home. Additionally, the Aztec have been outscored 10-2 in the second half this season.
Series History vs. SDSU
Washington leads the series with San Diego State 17-6-8 including an 11-2-2 mark over the last 15 meetings between the two. The lone two SDSU victories came in the 2016 season when the Aztec swept the season series. UW returned the favor with a pair of wins last year including a 1-0 victory in San Diego last season.
Of note, 13 matches between the two schools all-time had to be decided in overtime. Just two of those have come since 2014, but seven of the last eight matches between the two have been one-run affairs.
RPI Check-In
Despite dropping out of the polls this past week, the Huskies moved up in the most important metric there is: the NCAA RPI. Washington checked in at No. 22 in the second RPI rankings of the season; the highest ranking of any Pac-12 team and the fourth-highest among west coast schools.
Dominating Defense
Washington's defense has been impressive this season, allowing just 11 goals and posting four shutouts through nine matches.
The Huskies haven't just held teams from scoring, but have held teams from taking many shots at all. Washington has allowed just 31 total shots on goal through nine matches (3.44 per match) and 89 shots overall (9.9 per match). For example, despite a loss to Seattle U, the Huskies limited the Redhawks–who came into the match ranked second in the NCAA in shots per game–to just 10 shots overall, well off their average of 18.5 coming into the match.
Freshman center back Ethan Bartlow is the only field player to play in all 822 minutes this year, helping anchor the Huskies' back line with senior captain Quentin Pearson. Meanwhile, junior goalkeeper Saif Kerawala is second in the conference and is 24th nationally with four shutouts.
That's Just Offensive, Man
Despite a trio of setbacks in the last three matches, the Washington offense has been impressive through the first part of the season, scoring 15 goals through its first nine matches. The Huskies are averaging 1.67 goals per match thus far, leading the Pac-12 and are 34th in the NCAA with 5.33 points per match as well.
A total of 12 Huskies have recorded points this season–including 10 players with two or more points–with seven different players scoring goals. Seniors Kyle Coffee and Scott Menzies have each scored four goals with junior Joey Parish adding three goals and three assists. Senior Corban Anderson and junior James Smith recorded their first goals of the season at Oregon State on Saturday.
Last year, Washington scored 40 goals–the most since tallying 45 during in 2013. It was just the fourth time in the last 18 years the Huskies had scored 40+ goals in a season. Washington finished second in the Pac-12 and 17th in the NCAA with its 2.00 goals per game average, scoring at least three goals in a match seven times last season, going 6-1-0 in those contests.
Twice is Fun
Earlier this season, the Huskies posted a streak of scoring 2+ goals in eight-straight matches, dating back to last season. That matched the longest streak of games with 2+ goals since the 1991-92 season and ended up one shy of the program record of nine set during the 1981 season. Washington is 5-2-0 this season when scoring two or more goals in a match.
Pac-12 Rankings
A number of Huskies are ranked among the top players in the conference. Saif Kerawala ranks second in the Pac-12 and is 24th in the NCAA with four shutouts–just two behind the national leaders. Kyle Coffee and Scott Menzies are second in the Pac-12 with two game-winning goals each. Coffee and Menzies are also tied for fourth with four total goals and Coffee is fourth with Joey Parish seventh in total points. Menzies ranks fourth in the Pac-12 in shot accuracy, scoring on 53.8% of his shots taken this year.
Overtime Blues
The Huskies' 3-2 double-overtime loss at Denver extended their streak to five straight overtime matches without a victory (0-4-1). Washington went 0-3-1 in four OT matches in 2017. The Huskies last overtime win was a 1-0 victory at Stanford on Oct. 30, 2016.
Stopping the PKs
It's been a while since Washington has allowed a penalty kick opportunity and even longer since giving up a PK goal: 59 matches and counting. The last spot kick taken against the Huskies came last year at San Diego State (10/26/17), an attempt which was saved by Saif Kerawala. The last time a PK was converted by an opponent came during the 2015 season when UCLA was awarded three PKs–converting two–in a wild 3-2 double-overtime victory at Husky Soccer Stadium (10/4/15). Washington is 1-1 in PKs this year as James Smith scored at Oregon State.
Record Crowd
The Huskies match against Seattle U on Sunday, drew a crowd of 2,994 fans–the fourth-largest crowd in Husky Soccer Stadium history. Three of the top four crowds to watch the Huskies came against the Redhawks including a record 3,419 fans who watch UW beat SU 2-1 in 2016.
Number 200 for Clark
UW's match vs. New Mexico on Aug. 27 was the 200th match coached by UW Head Coach Jamie Clark in 11 seasons. Clark posted a 128-50-22 record in 200 matches during three stops as a head coach including an 89-35-19 record at UW. Clark began his coaching career at Harvard where his teams went 26-10-1 in two seasons. He coached one year at Creighton, going 13-5-2 before moving to Seattle.

The Huskies' season-opening match against Maryland was the 1,000th in program history. Men's soccer has been a varsity sport at Washington since the 1962 season and the Huskies have amassed a record of 626-263-111 over the course of its first 1,000 matches.
