
Huskies Start Strong at ITA Northwest Regionals

STANFORD, Calif. --- The Washington women's tennis team completed the first day of play at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday. Five Huskies advanced to the round of 32 in singles while four Husky doubles pairs reached the round of 32 in doubles.
First seeded senior Stacey Fung earned a bye in her opening round match. She would beat Baran from San Jose State 6-1, 6-4 in her round of 64 match. Fung will face Schroer from Santa Clara in the round of 32 on Saturday.
Freshman Nika Zupancic won her opening round match 7-6(4), 7-5 against Dimitrova from Portland. Zupancic would fall to Maxfield from San Francisco in the round of 64 7-6(4), 2-6, 0-6.
Junior Katarina Kopcalic won both of her singles matches on Friday, first defeating Hummel from Fresno State 6-4, 6-4. She would go on to beat Smith from Cal 6-1, 7-6(7). Kopcalic will match up against Lord from Stanford in the round of 32.
Sophomore Vanessa Wong took down Vyrlan from Pacific 6-4, 6-3 in her first match of the day. Wong then defeated Meszarof from Portland State to reach the round of 32. Wong will face Stloukalova from Cal on Saturday morning.
Freshman Delara Zamani won both of her matches beating Valk from Portland State 6-2, 6-1 and then took down Pedrero Galindo from San Jose State 6-4, 6-1. Zamani will face Gordon from Stanford in the round of 32.
Junior Natsuho Arakawa defeated Goyette from St. Mary's 6-1, 6-1 in her first round matchup. She then beat Popescu from Pacific 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. Arakawa will go up against Bright from Cal in the round of 32 on Saturday.
Freshman Sedona Gallagher fell to Haugher from Cal in her first round matchup 1-6, 3-6. Junior Abbey Watanabe lost to Timotin from Fresno State 1-6, 3-6 in her opening round. Junior Kenadi Hance lost to Bui from San Francisco 5-7, 7-6(4), 0-6.
In doubles action, all four Husky duos advanced to the round of 32 which will be played on Saturday. Fung and Zupancic beat Rosenber/Yao from Stanford 8-3. Wong and Zamani earned a bye into the second round, while Hance and Kopcalic beat Kreutzer and Rasmussen from Seattle U as a result of a withdraw. Finally, Arakawa and Gallagher beat Nelson and Zeynel from Cal 8-4.
