For the first time in school history, the University of Washington dance team will compete at the Universal Dancers Association (UDA) College Dance Team National Championship, Jan. 12-14, at ESPN's Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The UW dance team will be competing in the Division 1A Hip Hop semifinals on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 7:00pm ET against 13 schools from across the country. The top eight teams after the semifinals will advance to finals on Sunday, Jan. 14.
The dancers will compete against defending National Champion Cincinnati, along with Kentucky, UNLV, Memphis, UAB, Alabama, Syracuse, Ball State, San Diego State, Temple, LSU, Virgina Tech, and Michigan.
Third-year head cheer and dance coach Kenny Dow and first-year dance coach and former UW dancer Jordan French are leading the charge in showcasing UW's dance team to the rest of the country.
"I am extremely confident that our dance team is one of the best in the country," said Dow. "We are excited for the opportunity to compete on a national stage for the first time in school history and represent the University of Washington. Our dancers have worked extremely hard during the fall term to prepare. Our goal this year is to make finals and I believe we have the talent and mental toughness to reach that goal."
The dance team will perform its national routine at halftime of the women's basketball game on Sunday, Jan. 7 vs. Colorado. Game time at Alaska Airlines Arena is set for 2:00pm. For tickets, visit GoHuskies.com.
