January 28, 2018 | Women's Tennis
DURHAM, N.C. – Despite winning the doubles point and battling to four three-set singles matches, Washington women's tennis fell in a close 4-2 loss to No. 9 Duke in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-off Weekend championship on Sunday.
"I told the girls after the match that today was one of my most proud moments as a coach," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "They came back after an emotional win yesterday and came out with just as much energy and fight. They competed so well the entire time. Everybody was in a position to win and gave themselves a chance to win. The entire match on a whole was really positive and will help our girls believe they belong with the top teams."
The Huskies (2-2) played in nine three-set singles matches in the ITA Kick-off Weekend, five against LSU on Saturday and four against Duke on Sunday. Additionally, UW played four tiebreakers in singles against Duke.
The Huskies and the Blue Devils fought hard for the doubles point. After Kenadi Hance and Lana Slavica lost their match 6-2, the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles pairs were neck and neck. Taking down the No. 1 doubles team in the nation, Chen and Harris, Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong won 7-5. Alexis Prokopuik and Stacey Fung also won a close doubles match, 7-5.
Kopcalic came out strong in singles. She won the first set 6-4, but then dropped the second, 6-2. She took an early 4-1 lead in the third set, but Hannah Zhao came back to tie it at 4-4. They traded games until it was tied at 6-6 to reach another tiebreaker. Kopcalic fought to win the tiebreaker, 8-6, to win the match.
The freshman Wong got off to a tough start in singles, dropping a 6-1 loss. Facing a loss, she went to a tiebreaker in the second set. Wong battled to win that set to go to a third, but ultimately fell 6-4.
Kobayashi and Prokopuik both dropped their singles matches. Kobayashi played close sets, going to a tiebreaker in the first. However, she lost the match, 7-6, 7-5. Prokopuik fell in two sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Hance also struggled to start off singles. She lost her first set, 6-2, but bounced back in the second. She needed a tiebreaker, but she pushed a third set. Hance dropped the first three games of the third set before winning two in a row. Her opponent held Hance at bay, however, winning 6-4 to take the match and clinch the win for Duke.
Fung lost the first set and then won the first four games of the second set. Her opponent, No. 7 Samantha Harris, tied it back up at 6-6, forcing a tiebreaker. Fung came through, moving to a third set. She was leading 4-2 before the dual match was called, stopping her match.
