Dawgs Welcome Drechsel Back Home
January 25, 2018 | Volleyball
SEATTLE â The Huskies have added a transfer for the 2018 season, Samantha Drechsel, a high school All-American who just completed her freshman year at Maryland. It will be a homecoming for Drechsel, who is from Bothell, Wash. and attended Cedar Park Christian School.
Â
Drechsel is a 6-foot-4 outside/opposite hitter who saw extensive playing time this past season for a Terrapins team that continued to rise in the Big Ten Conference. Drechsel played in 109 sets and started 16 matches, averaging 1.94 kills per set and 0.52 blocks per set. She had double-figure kill numbers in five matches with season-highs of 15 kills and five blocks.
Â
Maryland went 18-14 last season for its most wins since 2010, and its seven wins in the Big Ten were the most for the squad since joining the conference.
Â
"We're thrilled to bring Sam back to Seattle to continue her career here at Washington," said Husky Head Coach Keegan Cook. "This fall, she not only competed well within the Big Ten in her freshman season, but her role and skill grew over the course of the season. That individual growth as well as her team's improvement are ideals that Sam and I both really value. She's eager to learn and I'm already looking forward to the spring season when she will join us."
Â
Drechsel was one of the top recruits in the nation as a senior. She was an AVCA Under Armour First Team All-American in 2016 and was rated the No. 23 player in the country by PrepVolleyball.com. She was also named to the Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 as a senior, one of two players from the state of Washington, along with her new Husky teammate Lauren Sanders.
Â
Samantha's older brother, Trey, is currently a junior on the Western Washington basketball team, and her mother, Marni, played volleyball at Pacific Lutheran.
