In just her first game as a collegiate player, Olivia Van der Jagt was already a starter, giving the Huskies valuable minutes in the midfield. Van der Jagt would go on to play in 12 games and make four starts, coming back from an early injury to start the last three games of the season for UW.
What does it feel like to play at Husky Soccer Stadium?
Van der Jagt: I'm always excited to play under the lights and in front of a big crowd. It felt amazing the first time I got to do that.
What is something the coaching staff has taught you off the field?
Van der Jagt: The coaching staff has taught me how to be responsible and how to have a great work ethic.
What is it like to play in the Pac-12 Conference?
Van der Jagt: It's an amazing opportunity to be able to play for the Pac-12 because it's such a big, talented conference. I'm excited for the competition that comes with being in this conference.
What is your favorite thing about living in Seattle?
Van der Jagt: I love how there is lots of water around Seattle, it makes for a great view. I also love being able to hike in the mountains around Seattle.
What are your favorite things to do in the summer in Seattle?
Van der Jagt: I love to go swimming in Lake Washington and go kayaking in Lake Union.
What are some of your earliest memories of playing soccer?
Van der Jagt: I remember playing on the sand fields near my house almost every day. I had some of the best memories as a kid playing on those fields.
Who is your biggest inspiration in why you play soccer?
Van der Jagt: My biggest inspiration in why I play soccer is my older brother. I would always watch him play when I was a kid and see how much he loved the game, so I wanted to be just like him.
What do you love most about playing soccer?
Van der Jagt: I love the competition and how you have to work hard for every win.
Who was your favorite player growing up?
Van der Jagt: My favorite player growing up was Mia Hamm. I loved her passion for the game and how crafty she was.
Can you talk about some of the experiences that have been opened up to you through the sport?
Van der Jagt: Because I've played soccer my whole life, I've been able to meet so many new people that I wouldn't have met otherwise. The teams that I have been on have become like a second family to me and have shaped who I am as a person and player.
