Hansen, Kalmoe Earn Silver Medals At World Championships
September 30, 2017 | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
SARASOTA, Fla. – Two former Washington rowers won silver medals Saturday at the 2017 World Rowing Championships. Megan Kalmoe '06 took second in the women's pair A final while Danielle Hansen '16 took silver in the leg, trunk & arms mixed four.
Kalmoe and rowing partner Tracy Eisser won silver medals in two World Cup competitions this summer and repeated that finish Saturday. Kalmoe, a three-time Olympian, was participating in her seventh World Championships.
Saturday, the American pair came through the first 500 meters in only fourth place, behind New Zealand, Denmark and Great Britain. By halfway, they had caught the Brits, but still sat third after 1,500. Over the final quarter of the race, they moved in front of the Danes to take the silver. The Kiwis led throughout for the gold, finishing in 7:00.53, about four seconds ahead of Kalmoe's boat (7:04.37).
"It was really fun to come and race the Danes again after Lucerne, although the race was behind New Zealand," Kalmoe told WorldRowing.com. "It's great to race here in front of this amazing crowd."
Hansen, who will return to Seattle as a member of the UW women's coaching staff, had won the silver medal at last year's Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, as well as at the previous two World Championship regattas. She and her U.S. crew kept that streak in tact Saturday.
Great Britain, gold medalist at the Olympics, led throughout, with the U.S. trailing close behind through the first portion of the race while Italy and Ukraine battled for the bronze. The Americans took second with a time of 7:18.80 while Italy took third place in 7:23.52.
Earlier Saturday, in the B final for the women's four, two boats with Huskies on board competed. Sophomore Carmela Pappalardo '20 and Italy came from sixth place at 500 meters and fifth at 1,000 to finish in second place, while Kirstyn Goodger '14 and New Zealand came from sixth at the halfway mark to finish in fourth place.
The regatta comes to a close Sunday. As it concerns Husky alumni, the focus will be on the men's and women's eights.
In the women's A final, the United States and Great Britian will both compete for medals. The British boat includes Fiona Gammond '15 in the No. 3 seat, while two members of the U.S. crew are UW alumnae: coxswain Katelin Guregian '09 and stroke Sarah Dougherty '16.
In the men's B final, Jacob Dawson '16 will for in the bow seat for Great Britain.
Additionally, two current Husky men's rowers will compete in the double sculls B final: Ben Davison '18 for the United States and Bram Schwarz for the Netherlands.
