Eights & Men's Coxed Pair Highlight Tuesday At Worlds
September 26, 2017 | Women's Rowing
SARASOTA, Fla. – Heats for the men's and women's eights, as well as men's coxed pair repechages races highlighted the day's competition for Washington rowers Tuesday at the 2017 World Rowing Championships.
Finn Schroeder '16, rowing in the men's coxed pair repechage, earned a berth in the A final with a first-place finish. His German crew came from fourth place at 500 meters and second place at the halfway mark to beat the other four crews. The final is Friday at 9:45 a.m. PT.
Both the men's and women's eights competitions got underway Tuesday, with the winner of each of two heats in both earning a direct path to the A final, and all other boats moving to repechages.
Three former Huskies participated in heat one of the women's eight's first day of competition. As with the men, only the two heat winners avoided repechages and the two boats that featured Huskies finished second and third in heat one.
The U.S. women's eight, with Sarah Dougherty '16 rowing in the streak seat and Katelin Guregian '09 as the coxswain, started out in third after the first 500, but moved into second and remained there the rest of the way, finishing one second behind the victorious New Zealand crew. Great Britain, with Fiona Gammond '15 (pictured (Gammond front row, right), photo courtesy of British Rowing) in the three seat, finished third.
Six boats will participate in a repechage, at 9:51 a.m. on Thursday, with the top four advancing to the A final, where New Zealand and heat-two winner Romania await.
In the men's eight, heat one, Jacob Dawson '16 rowed in the bow seat for the Great Britain entry that finished in second place. The Brits trailed Italy throughout the race and finished just over two seconds behind at the finish line. Italy and Germany took the top spot in the two heats, while the remaining 10 entries will all row for the four remaining spots in the A final. Repechages are Thursday at 10:01 and 10:11 a.m. PT.
On Wednesday, five Huskies will row in two different repechages. In the women's four, Italy (Carmela Pappalardo '20) and New Zealand (Kirstyn Goodger '14) will row in reps one and two, respectively. Each repechage includes five entries, with the top two in each advancing to the A final.
Three Husky men will represent three different nations in the second of two repechages in the men's coxed pair. Ben Davison '18 (U.S.), Bram Schwarz '20 (Netherlands) and Conlin McCabe '11 (Canada) will row in lanes three, five and six in that race, with only the top two finishers making the A final.
