Huskies Finish Tied for Eighth at Schooner Fall Classic
September 25, 2017 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. – In its first event of the 2017-18 season, the University of Washington women's golf team saved their best round for last at the Schooner Fall Classic as it posted a 4-under 280 to finish tied for eighth with a 7-over 859 (294-285-280). The Dawgs were led by freshman Rino Sasaki, who finished tied for 13th with a 2-under 211, and sophomore Karen Miyamoto who tied for 16th at 1-under 212.
"I was encouraged by how our group played today on a course that was set up for success," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "They rallied today and just played really solid. Rino, as a freshman, is such a competitor and she didn't let anything phase her. It was good to see our group step up and get better every round at our first event, especially playing without Julianne (Alvarez) and Wenyung (Keh). It's early in the season but we're excited by what we saw today and this weekend."
Sasaki carded UW's best round of the tournament on Monday, as she went 3-under over her final 18 holes to jump seven spots on the leaderboard. The freshman from Tokyo improved upon her score in every round, going 3-over 74, 2-under 69 and 3-under 68. She had 12 birdies over the three-day event, which was the most by any of the five Dawgs competing.
Following just one stroke behind her was sophomore Miyamoto who recorded her fourth career top 20 effort, tying for 16th at 1-under 212 (70-69-73). After having three rounds total under par a year ago following her arrival on the team in January, Miyamoto posted two sub-par rounds to open her sophomore campaign.
Junior Sarah Rhee's final round mirrored her second day in Norman, as she finished with a 1-over 72 to take a tie for 41st at 6-over 219. Rhee opened the event with a 4-over 75 but responded with back-to-back 72's to move up two spots on the board.
One of two Dawgs to score a sub-70 round on Monday, was sophomore Ellen Takada, who closed the tournament with a 2-under 69. She improved upon her round two score by eight strokes and finished with a tie for 52nd at 8-over 221 (75-77-69). Sophomore Eunwon Park rounded out the UW crew as she also saved her best round for last, finishing the final 18 with an even-par 71. She tied for 63rd at 13-over 226 (80-75-71).
Alabama won the team title with a commanding 21-under 831 while the Crimson Tide's Kristen Gillman took the individual title with a 13-under 200.
Up next, the Huskies will stay home to host the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, Oct. 10-11 at Sahalee Golf Club in Sammamish, Wash.
