August 28, 2017 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE - The Washington Huskies are set to host the 22nd Husky Nike Invitational this weekend, with No. 2 Florida, New Mexico, and Portland all heading to Seattle for games. The Huskies will match up with the Florida Gators on Friday, September 1 at 8:00 pm PT and the New Mexico Lobos on Monday, September 4 at 12:00 pm PT. Portland will not play UW but will match up with Florida and New Mexico as well.
The Huskies have won the last two Husky Nike Invitationals, 2016 and 2015. Current senior Shannon Simon was named the Offensive MVP each of those years, with goalkeeper Sarah Shimer named the Defensive MVP in 2016. In the last five years, the Huskies are 8-2 at the Invitational.
Last week, Washington went 1-1, winning 2-1 at Illinois to end a 2-1-0 Big Ten road trip before falling in overtime to SMU 2-1 in the home opener. Sarah Shimer matched a career high with five saves against SMU, while Lisa Jensen recorded a defensive save as well.
Kimberly Keever scored two goals against Illinois, her first two-goal game since September 20, 2015 against Gonzaga. Keever joins Simon as the Huskies with multi-goal games already this season.
Anissa Dadkhah also scored her first goal as a Husky last week, coming against SMU. Dadkhah was the third Husky to score their first goal at UW this season, along with Jessika Cowart and Sianna Siemonsma.
The Florida Gators will enter Friday's contest with the Huskies at 4-0-0 this season and ranked second in the nation after receiving nine first-place votes in this week's poll. The Gators began the year with shutouts over Florida Atlantic and Troy. Florida followed that with a 3-2 victory over No. 1 Stanford and a 2-1 win over Syracuse. Gabby Seiler currently leads Florida in scoring with four goals, while Parker Roberts has also scored two goals. Susi Espinoza has been in goal for all four games for Florida, recording two shutouts thus far.
The New Mexico Lobos are 2-2-0 this season, with a Friday night game against Portland on tap before facing off with Washington on Monday. New Mexico has taken down Grand Canyon 1-0 and UTEP 1-0, but fell to USF 2-1 and to New Mexico State 1-0. Three different Lobos have scored goals this year, with Emily Chavez, Claire Lynch, and Jill Olguin all finding the back of the net. Emily Johnson has played to a 0.74 GAA in her four games, recording two shutouts.
