July 27, 2017 | Men's Golf
SEATTLE – University of Washington men's golf coach Alan Murray has announced Thomas Sutton will join the staff as the program's new assistant coach. The Montgomery, Ala. native spent the previous two seasons as the assistant coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Prior to his coaching career, Sutton was a fixture on the Blazers' roster (2011-14), competing in 47 events throughout his career. Murray, who spent three years as an assistant and three as a head coach at UAB, coached Sutton throughout his college career.
"I'm really excited to welcome Thomas to the Husky family," said Murray. "I've known him for seven years and he will be a great fit at the University of Washington. He played at an extremely high level on a successful college golf team and competed professionally. He's an accomplished player who will bring a ton of expertise, enthusiasm and a great work ethic to our program. Thomas is an excellent coach and will do a great job helping our guys become better people, students and golfers."
In his first season as an assistant coach under Murray, Sutton helped guide UAB to its third straight appearance in the NCAA Championships. The Blazers earned their way to Eugene, Ore., by placing third at the NCAA Marana Regional in Marana, Ariz.
His collegiate resume includes appearances in the 2012 Stanford Regional where he tied for 10th overall and led UAB to the NCAA Championships, 2013 Baton Rouge Regional (T-17) and 2014 Sugar Grove Regional (T-42) and NCAA Championships. He helped lead the Blazers to a second-place finish in the Conference USA Championships his senior year – the program's best C-USA Tournament finish since taking home gold in 2008.
Sutton graduated from UAB in 2014 with a degree in accounting. As a student-athlete, Sutton appeared on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, was tabbed a UAB Student-Athlete of the Week multiple times, and became the first Blazer to be named to a C-USA All-Academic team (2012) since 2009. He went on to play professionally with the Hopkins Tour, National Golf Association and Web.com Tour following graduation.
