Dawgs Dictate Action At Ken Shannon Invite
May 06, 2017 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – A sunny spring day left a good lasting memory of Husky Track as Washington wrapped up its 2017 home season by winning 13 events at the Ken Shannon Invitational today. The Dawgs set themselves up well for the championship meets to come with numerous season- and personal-bests.
While the Huskies are a week away from the Pac-12 Championships, Cole Jensen made a strong start at the Pac-12 Multi-Events today in Corvallis, Ore. Jensen posted a day one decathlon score of 3,892 points to sit in third-place, just four points out of second and 114 points behind the leader, Isaiah Oliver, of Colorado.
Jensen opened with a PR in the 100-meter dash, clocking 10.87 seconds, and he was just a fraction of an inch off his PR in the long jump at 22-4 ¾. Jensen then threw 41-1 ¼ in the shot put and won the high jump competition at 6-5 ½. He finished with a 400-meters time of 50.04 seconds, and he will look for a career-best Pac-12 decathlon finish with the final five events on Sunday.
Appropriately, the throws group picked up several wins and season-bests this afternoon at the meet honoring former Husky Head Coach Ken Shannon, who made UW a throwing powerhouse. Gina Flint continued her impressive comeback, competing for the third week in a row after starting her year at the UW-WSU Dual Meet, and she had one of the best discus marks of her career today, throwing 167-9. That's just three inches off her career-best, and ranks Flint fourth in the Pac-12 this season and should also be a West Prelims qualifier.
Flint was also second in the shot put today at 48-6 ¼ but the win went to freshman Angel Nkwonta, who had a new PR of 48-10 ¼ which also puts her right on the West Prelims bubble.
Another freshman, Jose Padilla, was a double winner today, as he took the shot put at 54-0 ½ but then set a new PR in the discus, throwing 170-10. Senior Dan Boyden was third in his final home meet at 158-9.
The Huskies won both long jumps, with senior Kennadi Bouyer leaping 18-9 ¼ and junior Dante Pettis getting his second win of the season on the men's side, going 24-3. Senior Kate Adler also went 18-3 1/4 for third.
In the pole vault, senior Elizabeth Quick tied the Husky Track record in her final home appearance, clearing 13-9 ¾ for the win. Quick now shares the record with fellow Dawgs Diamara Planell Cruz and Kristina Owsinski. Owsinski chose to rest up this week in advance of Pac-12s. Kaitlin Zinsli also had a solid make of 12-8 in the vault and Annika Dayton made 12-2.
Sophomore Blaise Black was the men's pole vault winner, getting a third attempt clearance of 16-7 ½. Jacob Bowler took second at 16-1 ¾ and Taylor Barnes also made that height, competing unattached.
The Husky sprinters also had a strong day, although headwinds in all the short sprints slowed the times down a bit. But it didn't bother the women's 4x100-meter relay, which rolled to an impressive win early in the day in 45.78 seconds. That time for the group of Sarah Stavig, Laura Anuakpado, Imani Apostol, and Cydnicia Wade puts them into the Husky top-10 list at No. 7, the second different group to make the 4x1 top-10 list this season.
Apostol came around with an individual victory in the 400-meter dash in a new PR of 55.23 seconds today. At 200-meters, Kennadi Bouyer and Laura Anuakpado went 1-2, with Bouyer winning in 24.27 and Anuakpado in 24.49 seconds, while Wade was third in 25.04. And it was Stavig who won the 100-meters into a headwind, crossing in 12.27 seconds.
In the men's sprints, junior Jacopo Spanò looked impressive, winning the 200-meters in 21.43 seconds despite the headwind, and sophomore Ryan Croson ran a PR of 21.90 seconds for third. Freshman Khalil Winfrey also won his heat in 22.11, a season-best. Winfrey was second in the 100-meters in 10.76 while senior Lucas Strong was third in 10.80 in his home swan song. Freshman Jason Palmer took fourth in the 400-meters in 49.14 seconds.
Junior Eric Simpson was second in the 110m hurdles in a time of 14.64 seconds, while junior Josh Gordon was second in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.20 seconds and freshman Oscar Herrera was fourth in 54.35, a new PR.
In the mid-distances, Josephine Bosserman cut a couple seconds off her career-best at 1,500-meters, finishing fourth in 4:30.47, and freshman Micaela Kostecka also had a PR of 4:35.11, with Grace Hodge finishing in 4:40.42. On the men's side, redshirt freshman Julius Diehr lowered his 1,500m PR to 3:56.07 and freshman Nick Laccinole, competing unattached, ran 3:53.91.
Up next, the Huskies will choose their 28 men and 28 women to travel to the conference championships. The Pac-12 Championships will take place next Saturday and Sunday, May 13-14, at Hayward Field in Eugene.
