May 24, 2017 | Women's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. – In the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships today, Stacey Fung defeated Carol Zi Yang of UNLV 7-6 (4), 6-2 to advance to tomorrow's second round at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The match began with both Fung and Yang breaking serve to draw the score even at 1-1, however the senior from UNLV claimed the following two games to lead 3-1. Fung responded with two consecutive games of her own, before the first set eventually reached a score of 5-5.
Looking to close out the first set, Fung took a 6-5 lead before Yang sent it to a tie-breaker. With the tie-break at 3-3, Fung took off on a 4-1 run to claim the first set 7-6.
Just as they did to open the first set, the two traded games to open the second and brought the score to 1-1. However, Fung went on a three game win streak to go up 4-1 and the Vancouver, B.C. native eventually took the second set 6-2 to win her 24th match of the season and advance to tomorrow's second round.
She will take on Ellen Perez of Georgia who defeated Kimmy Guerin of Wake Forest 6-3, 6-3 earlier today. Perez is the 12th overall seed in the tournament.
