Washington Softball Wins Second Game In Five Innings

SEATTLE – For the second day in a row, No. 7 Washington (45-11) defeated its opponent in five innings, as this time it was a 12-4 victory over No. 21 Michigan (42-12-1).
The game was headed for the full seven innings as Washington was down to one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Julia DePonte changed that when she hit a three-run home run to account for the necessary eight-run lead.
Michigan was first to get on the board when lead-off hitter Kelly Christner hit a solo shot off Washington's Taran Alvelo (30-6).
The Huskies answered back in the bottom of the frame when Ali Aguilar also hit a solo homer in the lead-off spot to knot the game at 1-1. Two more runs came in when Sis Bates and Morganne Flores and scored on a two-RBI double from Taylor Van Zee.
The sticks stayed hot in the third inning for the Dawgs as five more runs scored. Casey Stangel got things started with a double to the fence. Flores singled, advancing Stangel to third. Van Zee reached on fielder's choice, sending Stangel home. DePonte continued with a single to left center. The two were moved to scoring positions when Trysten Melhart laid down a sacrifice bunt and were brought in on a double from Kirstyn Thomas.
With two outs in the third, the Huskies were ahead 6-1 and Kelly Burdick hit the ball over the head of the Wolverine shortstop, bringing in Thomas. The final run of the inning came from and Aguilar RBI single.
Michigan attempted to catch up to the Huskies seven-run lead, but stopped short scoring three runs off three hits in the fourth.
The final inning brought in four runs for the Huskies, beginning with an RBI single from Van Zee. The junior brought in Aguilar who was hit by a pitch. Flores walked, moving Van Zee to second and the two were came home on DePonte's walk-off homer.
The Washington Huskies will play tomorrow, Sunday, May 21 at 4 p.m. PT against the winner of the Seattle Regional's Game five. The game will air live on ESPN with Beth Mowins and Michele Smith on the call.
