May 19, 2017 | Softball
SEATTLE— Washington softball's Taran Alvelo (29-6) threw her first career no-hitter Friday night at Husky Softball Stadium, leading the Huskies to an 8-0 win over Montana in five innings in the team's first game of the NCAA Regional.
Washington improved to 44-11 on the season and Montana moved to 35-22 after the tournament's first day of play.
Washington's offense scored all eight runs off eight hits, all in the third inning, run-ruling the Grizzlies in their first tournament appearance. Seven of Washington's nine batters collected hits, including Ali Aguilar and Taylor Van Zee, who each had two hits and three RBIs on the night.
The no-hitter marked Washington's first post-season no-hitter since May 19, 2013, exactly four years ago, when Bryana Walker led the Dawgs to an 8-0 victory in five innings over Hawaii.
The game started out as a pitching duel with no runs scored until the third inning.
Aguilar led-off that inning with a single though the left side and advanced off a sacrifice bunt from Sis Bates. Casey Stangel reached on an error by Montana's first baseman, allowing Aguilar to move to third. She came home on a RBI-double from Morganne Flores to put the Huskies on the board, 1-0.
Two more runs were brought in when Van Zee tripled to bring in Flores and Stangel. Trysten Melhart singled to the shortstop, plating Van Zee to make the score 4-0, Washington. Kirstyn Thomas followed with a single and stole second before she and Melhart came home when Kelly Burdick hit a two-RBI single.
Washington batted around and sent Aguilar to the plate for the second time in the inning. She singled and advanced on the throw from center field, advancing Burdick to third. Bates rounded out the inning with a two-run double deep to right field.
The Huskies move on to play Michigan in the regional's winner's bracket, tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT. The game will air on the ESPN family of networks.
